Unhappy Clutch just let go Help!

So I'm on the way home and approach a stop sign. I press the clutch pedal and it goes to the floor and won't come back up. The car starts buzzing underneath as if something let go and is rotating and hitting up against the engine or chassis. I shut down the engine and called AAA. Its a 70 tranny and the pedal has had a little click of a hangup. Any thoughts on my predicament?

I'm hoping its just a clutch cable.

Joe,

This sounds like a clutch cable failure but on your ’70 it can be a lot other.

The first place I would look is at the clutch A-arm coming out of the driver’s side of the transmission bell housing. The original clutch linkage has a plastic piece between the clutch cable and the arm. That is a common failure and has the exact same symptoms you describe. The fix is to replace the plastic piece with an aftermarket aluminum part (available from our host).

Other possibilities include; failure of the TO bearing and pulling through the clutch fingers, pulling of the pivot, a failure at the chassis connection for the guide tube, and many more.

Some careful diagnosis will prevent you from investigating paths that don’t yield a solution.

With everything working properly, a ’70-’71 clutch can work great.

Thanx for all the links Grady. Seems like you've dealt w/ these issues quite a while. I'll have to get under the car to give it a look.

I tried restarting in neutral and still got that rapping racket so I'm not sure that its just a cable.

Sounds like a clutch release bearing (throw out bearing) fork or fork pivot problem.
