Yes, I believe you're "missing something"... I had an 05 997S and though it would actually break out laughing as it passed Boxsters I still sold it and bought a few "old dog slow" air-cooled 911's... must be between the gold chains and the alzeimers I didn't know better!

You know this thread just about sums up most of the discussions I have with my car nut mates. Yes there are plenty of great alternatives to drive but if you like the feel of our 911's there is nothing to match them.

This is almost like watching hungry trout rise for a well-tied fly on a still morning.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your input here. I still want an older 911 for a play car. As far as loving a 911 for what it is.... Well, that 2.4L I drove was very raw and fun. It was the cleanest of them all but the serouse lack of power made me think of an old Fiat 124 I had. Didn't really have enough get up to give me any seat of the pants/ white knuckle driving pleasure. However I did drive a 2.7L race car. Still a dog but the handleing made it rather interesting. Rough... That car put a grin on my mug. I would like to find/ build up a car somewhat like that one... with enough grunt to scare the ba-jesus out of me. What about the 3.2L, 3.6L, 3.8L cars or the 930s. Got Grunt?

Just curious, and not trying to be a wise ass, -did you drive any of these cars a higher revs?, I haven't spent a lot of time behind the wheel of the early cars like the 2.4's but in a 2.7 and definitely a 3.0sc you should have felt some of what we are all talking about from say 3500-5500 rpm, that's when these engines and the car's they're attached to come alive. Sure, they are not fast by modern standards, -and sorry to break it to you, neither is your 2.5 boxter for that matter, but that's irrelevant, on public roads they're plenty fast, and judging from your choice of a boxter, I doubt you are really into speed racing down streets anyway!, I had a 2001 boxter in the family for a while and loved it, the handling is amazingly better than our 911's, no matter what anyone tells you!, but the fun factor of trying to learn how to drive an older 911 at 9/10's is way more fun, it has been for me at least.

Nah Levi, you pegged it there!!!! That's about it. Rough, slow, dogs one and all. Let the old guys have their fun, 'ya know? You'll also find that most of the geezers that have one also have another one for parts. Not at all like the new trouble-free cars. But you know, sometimes out of respect (or pity) you have to wave at the old fellows. Sort of like veterans sitting around telling war stories. But I WILL tell you this, you've made their day just talking about the old rattletraps. (you'll also find alot of them that like junk like tube audio equipment here also...sheesh, get with the times! 'ya feel me?)

These guys that drive these old 911s are just poseurs. Those who really know where it's at, the ones in the 'in crowd' don't actually drive their 911s. They just throw tens of thousands of dollars at them and putz around with them in the garage year in and year out.

Oh, Revved the hell out of it. Same with my boxster... I agree the 2.5 boxster doesn't have a whole lot of power but it still has outpreformed the other cars I've driven.
As far as the one race car.... I'm pretty sure that car had all the goodie worn out of it. Might have been a little over due for a rebuild. Rather smokey and had a nasty high rpm miss. Never got that one over 5000. It just wouldn't do it. Might have been some ignition problems too.
What about some of these larger displacement cars?..?... or turbos...

Is it possible that the technology and weight distribution of the Boxter allows you to be faster, or leads you to believe you're faster, when in fact the real problem is that you lack the skill to perform well in a 911?

Just a theory I'm working with.

Was a 1980 Trans-am turbo. But it was an emissions choked tank. So I set about fixing that with a way over square 400 block with the crank out of a 301. Ended out at 4.030" bore over 3.0" stroke with a couple of turbos. Very fun. Very expence and absolutly destructive. Four transmissions and three rear ends later I decided it just wasn't worth it...

Well Levi, I believe you have stumbled into the wrong board my man.
This whole forum was started and built around folks from around the world that could probably find a lot of other cars to drive and work on but chose older porsches. Our owner and host has made a a living on it and not only that, it is a community.

Please don't take offense because you are welcome as long as you want to stay but the way you are talking is like telling a mom her new born baby is ugly as sin.
