Am I missing something here????
Ok, the 911 is supposed to be the absolute definition of a sports car... right?
I've been a Porsche fan ever since I can remember and about four years ago finally bought one of my own. a shiny blue 97 boxster 2.5 with a 5 speed. Yeah, yeah not a real Porsche.....blah! Now since then I've been driving every 911 I can talk the owner in to letting me take on a joy ride and ,sorry guy's, they've been total doggs. Am I missing something here? I've driven about 15 different cars and so far my boxster will absolutely destroy everyone of them. Now then, I'm not knocking the 911. In fact I still really want one but I've yet to find one that hauls ass like.... well, hauls ass at all. I live in the Sacramento CA area and would love to see a pre 993 car the really gets it. If I have any takers here I'm more then willing to let you drive my car as well. |

Scenario 1
I think the only people letting you drive their "911" were actually only letting you drive a 912 with 911 badges on them. Scenario 2 You haven't driven either and your just wishing you had! Scenario 3 You own a boxter and yet you long for something a little more Raw with more of a seat of the pants thrill and you think that tossing out a challenge might actually get you a ride in a 911!!! ![]() Last edited by jwernquist; 10-05-2006 at 08:04 PM.. |

You aren't missing anything -- except maybe 20 or 30 years.
These old 011s really ARE total doggs. Your Boxster is far superior. lMost of us here just like old, creaky anachronisms -- it's like training in a martial art when the other guy has a 44.

Wrong, wrong and wrong. They have all been 911's one real early 2.4, a bunch of 2.7s "major dog" and the majority being 3L. Not impressed with any of them.
Yes, I have a boxster of which I abuse daily. Not really a challenge but if you would like it to be... Might be fun. I like that tough guy on a keyboard thing... That's pretty funny. |

Randy is 100% on the mark - the 911s are overhyped dinosaurs loved by a buch of losers that can't afford new ones. Your Boxter is an example of superior engineering compared to the 911s. Sorry some one misled you so badly about 911s.
Enjoy your car.

Yellow Bird doesn't really exist - its a myth, a hoax, just like landing men on the moon. Nothing to see here....

GruppeB is a loose collection of guys that drive antiquated rust-prone dinosaurs with engines cooled the same way a lawnmower is, with 1950's VW technology gearboxes, and that all small like oil and old leather... ...and make them worse.

Enjoy your Boxster, it is a great car. If you want to just go fast, then a 911 is not for you. You may like the style, but a 911 is not about looks (although it is sexy). It is about feel. It sounds like you don't have an appreciation for the "feel" of the 911. That is not necessarily a bad thing; afterall, the 911 isn't for everyone.

Yeah Levi, nothing but old guys here wearing gold chains who can't fully appreciate the superior engineering of today's cars. You know, they're hanging onto a dream. But you might find a more receptive crowd over on the "Boxter Haven" section of the website. Most of them here are very opinionated and not receptive to an obvious truth...Just leave 'em alone and let them retreat back into their little fantasy world. About your Boxster, what'll it do man?

We are a mentally ill bunch, just ask our loved ones... My baby shifts like an ox, wife hates driving it... and daughter hates riding in it... something about the smell of oil makes her sick... youngest complains about the crappy radio... apparently it works a little although I never use it...
would love to have a Boxster but it's just too... well... nice ;-)

Boxsters and 911s are like apples and oranges. They both come from trees, but their taste is totally different.

The old 911's are not the fastest on the road but they sure reward with the driving experience at the right hands. I love my ol' ,ratty, SC.
Would I like a newer Porsche? Sure, but then I figure for that amount, I could build a sweet old 911 with some tricks. Heck, an older Turbo can be had for the amount of a newer Boxter. No offense intented but I figure anyone with the means can go buy a new Porsche. It, IMO, takes a little bit more courage to get an older one and beat the crap out it.

Anyone who drives an older 911 and doesn't get a unique feeling of
true seat of pants sports car handling is really missing the point. If you are looking brute hp and power you can find modified porsches that will give you that but it isn't the definition of these cars. If you are looking for that you can go buy a new mustang or something similar. The thing that separates these cars is lighter weight and handling . The newer porsches are more powerful but they also weigh a lot more. They are much more like a touring car now than the old raw sports car feel. That feeling is not for everyone but my car is 20 years old with 90k+ and it still makes me smile every time I drive it. So the answer to your question is, yes I think are missing something.
