Why does car run hotter with A/C on?
I am embarrased to ask but I have to know. Load on engine from the compressor? Heat from condensor in engine compartment? Thanks!

You're absolutely right - both! Although the increased load on the engine is probably the major cause.
BUT! The AC should make more than a few degrees of difference, if you are seeing a big increase in the temp, something is wrong. - roGER |

just how high can the temp get before it's considered unsafe? i was in traffic yesterday in atlanta heat with a/c on, and the needle crept up to just below the last white line before the red. does this sound pretty typical for a 911?

My oil temp gets to just above the last white mark...it makes me nervous! I can't decide if the ambient temp is just so high (95+ here in South Carolina) that the car can't cool down of if it is the A/C...

I was just logging in to ask about engine
temps...my 83SC has just had a new A/C, Sanden Rotary, new everything!! My temp needle,in traffic, stays around the top white mark before the red. It's been real hot here in Austin,Tx lately so I guess that has something to do with it BUT, I have been considering putting a auxilary oil cooler to replace the trombone cooler, anybody done this ? how much does it help. |

Here in Vegas we get temps to 122' and the only way I can run my A/C and keep my SC cool was add a Carrera oil cooler to the fender and a Spal fan to cool it otherwise my temps would get to 250'+ real quick

Hey Leland/Adam,
We have the makings of a 911 band here. Mark Szabo and I are both guitar nuts. I also play bass and drums. Name suggestions? It was also recommended for me to install a screen. what kind of screen and where do you get a screen?... I just spent $2,000.00 on a new A/C. I', trying to save some money! T.I.A. |

Chuckr -
I installed a Mocal Cooler and thermostat that I got from Pelican a few weeks ago and the difference is dramatic ! I used to run at or over 250 all of the time and now the temps are down to under 210 and never exceed - it even on the 100 degree days we've had here lately. I put the installation on my web site with pictures so that you can see what your in for. Go to http://members.rennlist.com/5150targa You can also see it on the Pelican Tech Articles section at http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/tom_sharpes/oil_cooler1.htm By the way the Mocal cooler and t'stat with hardware and everything is about $700 from Pelican ! Good luck and if you have any questions just email me. Tom Sharpes 74 911 targa |

I have the factory oil cooler fan in the front wheel well in my 87 Carrera. Rigged a switch and a wire to start the fan when I want to. Here in the wilds of Conn, the fan never came on automatically. On this list last year, someone found a Mercedes thermoswitch that fires it up at a lower temp, but thats another project.

THe Cooler will not do you much good in traffic unless you get the fan,
You can order thru BAT in Fla for a Spal fan about $80.00 I dont know their ph # but you can do a search under "fan" and find it on some old posts. |

I agree with Jeff (jryerson) - adding the Carerra cooler without the fan will yield only a small benefit in heavy traffic. However, on the highway, I do notice a significant improvement in temps. With AC, on a hot, sticky day in the DC area, temps now around 210 - previously about 230/240 with the trombone. When I come to traffic - lights, stop and go, I flip on the fan to hold the temp to a max of about 220.
- The SPAL fan is available from BAT Industries (dealers for MOCAL) phone 941-355-0005 - or visit web at http://www.batinc.net They have a very good catalog pdf file with oil cooling equipment, mostly for Porsches. - To the poster asking about the screen - the stone guard fitting over the cooler is a stock Porsche item - about $65 - you should also get the foam gasket that goes around the cooler to prevent cooling air from going around the cooler rather than through it. The foam item is $70 (ouch!!). chuck |

Tom:
I really don't want to rain on your parade, but when you modified the stone shield behind your cooler, you also inadvertently made the cooler less efficient. I looked at your pictures, and saw that you had cut off the round top. The reason the stone shield was shaped like it was, is that with the round top and the rubber gasket, it meant to seal the cooler into a force-feed situation, in which all the air around the wheel well was forced through the cooler, not allowing any air to spill around the cooler, and this not through, the cooler. This is harder to describe than to understand, but Porsche, in their infinite wisdom, realized that with all the air turbulence around the cooler, they had better FORCE the air the go through it. Hence the shape of the stone shield, and the purpose of the rubber gasket. The fact that you are still getting good cooling is a tribute to the more efficient radiator cooler. Think how much more efficient it could be if you had air being forced through it, too......Andras |
