Oil Cooler Fans Again
I know its been stated before but just thought i would ask again. Its hard to find old stuff sometimes and mabye I'm just a bit lazzy.
I'm in TX and its hot now. I run my A/C on my 89 911. What are the temp marking on the oil temp gauge first. I would like to know more about the oil cooler fan and its thermostat. At what temp is the (I assume orig equip) thermostat suppose to engage and disengage. I kind of like this idea of a thermostat that would come on a little early. Can anyone help me with more details or the pros or cons of my thinking. Mike Miller "89" 911 ------------------ |

Hey Mike,
Just signed on as a new member. You're my first post. I just had work done on my cooler fan. I've got an 88 coupe. As far as markings go, from the top, it's 300 degrees, next one down is 250, then 210, then 180, then I think 120. There's a thermostat that opens at 215, sending oil to the cooler. The oil cooler fan doesn't turn on til 250 assuming your car has one. I'm not sure what year they started putting fans on, mid 80's. I wish they made a fanswitch that was lower than 250 but that's the way they designed it. Hope that helps. i'm enjoying the hot weather in Sacramento as well. Not too fun with an air cooler car. Good luck Kevin |

Kevin,
Thanks for the numbers. I'm not sure if my fan is working or the thermal switch is out. What kind of work did you have done? and what were your cost? If I find a way to test everything I'm going to put a manual overide in the cockpit. |

As I have noted on other posts, I recently added a Carerra oil cooler and SPAL fan - - replacing the trombone cooler. The fan is manually switched which I like much better. Just this evening, coming around WashDC's famed beltway in stop and go traffic, with ambient temps around 90 plus, my oil temp rose to about 220. I flipped on the fan and within 5 minutes or so, I was below 210. It held that temp even after I turned on the AC. Oh yeah, I have an oil cooler scoop but I'm not convinced it makes any difference at all at lower speeds.
