Best Dino Oil for '87??
I am using Shell Rotella 5W-40, type III, but have heard that the high detergent content of diesel oils can actually reduce compression? Other than diesel oils what is a good 20W-50? GTX, Havoline, Chevron, Valvoline, etc?

I believe it is formulated with special detergents for use in diesels which have a high sulfur content in the fuel.
I heard it has a higher zinc content which is bad for O2 sensors and plugs. I use Formula Shell 20w-50 in summer and 10w-40 in winter.

However the phosphorus (which is with the zinc in the oil) can send oxygen sensors to an early grave if the engine is burning/blowing excessive oil out the exhaust past the oxygen sensor.

Jim:
If an engine is consuming that quantity of oil, then I'd submit that one has far bigger issues to deal with than a shortlived oxysensor. ![]() A good quality (Bosch OEM) oxysensor lasts a good long time (30K to 60K) and is amazingly tolerant of less-than-ideal operating conditions. As long as one doesn't contaminate it with excess antiseize on installation, silicone compounds, overfilled oil tanks, and leaded fuels, they work just fine.
