Battery boiling

1988 Carrera. When I go for a lon highway drive. It almost appears like the battery is bein overcharged and starts boiling.
Does anyone have some diagnosis.
Battery works fine. Has enough CCA to turn the engine over - and starts fine.

Ditto on what dozer said. get it out of there before it frys your electrical system. while you are at it just replace the alternator too.

Yep, bad VR. I was able to purchase one locally for ~$25 IIRC. I suspect you could get the parts that you need from Pelican P. It's technically "internal" but it's really just bolted to the back of the alt. I recommend everyone with a 911 get a Voltmeter. I suspect my car was overcharging for months. Fortunately no damage was done. (the 911 is built like a tank) You can either change the VR, front bearing, and brushes yourself for $30-40 and an afternoon, or get the alt rebuilt by someone and that'll probably cost $75-100. I think getting a rebuilt alt is a couple hundred bucks.

Obviously it's the VR as every said. When I had my problem, someone even said if a battery cell is dried, the symptom is the same. So there is a possibility there. You can check both, the battery and VR.
I took the alternator out myself and let the pro do the rebuild. Cost me a little over $150.

What does your voltmeter say at the battery terminals with the engine running?

Boiling battery is clear sign of over-voltage...bad voltage regulator.

This Tech article might be of some help for the cars with internal VR's--->http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_volt_reg_replace/911_volt_reg_replace.htm
