boxter calipers over 944t discs

Has any one put the small Boxter calipers over the 944t 86my discs?

What size are the 944T rotors? Are they bigger than Carrera? I am curious about the answer to this also, it shouldn't take Bill V. long to chime in.

944 Turbo front rotors are 299x28mm.
Carrera front rotors are 282x24mm

Not sure how wide a rotor the Boxster caliper accepts nor if it will center over the rotors with the standard caliper adapters. If it's spacing only, you would have to either add a spacer to the caliper mount and/or the rotor accordingly.

Another option is use '86 944 Turbo front calipers and rotors. Modify caliper mount holes to 3.5" spacing, then space the rotor outward.

.... or same calipers, then trim OD of front hub and fit 993 one-piece front rotors (also 28mm) over it. Rotor spacing unknown.

All these based on prior threads and the properly balanced rear caliper/rotor combination. See the archives for more details.

I'm hoping Bill updates his charts to include 951 brake info.

What is the purpose? Better thermal reserve or bling?
As I recall the boxster brakepads have bigger surface so you'll need a big enough rotor (swept area) that can handle that pad surface or you'll have pad overhang.
As I persume it's for your SC, if you want better thermal reserve go for Carrera brakes they are bolt on and gives you 4mm thickker rotors.
As said above search the archives, here is one I started for the same reason: The ultimate brake upgrade page.

Boxster calipers want 24mm rotors('84-89 Carrera), Boxster S want 28mm but w/ a larger diameter.

The usual combo is heavily modified 964/944 calipers on the 944t rotors, it's expensive to do it that way, so it's not often done.

".... it's expensive to do it that way, so it's not often done."

It seems anything beyond Carrera brakes is expensive and relative. IMHO, for a DIY project, 944T/993 calipers/rotors is down the list. Maybe we should apply a graduated 1-5 scale to the term, "expensive" as it applies to new Porsche parts. E.g.

1. Normal (expensive. No need to apologize or rationalize)
2. Quasi-expensive
3. Somewhat-expensive
4. Serious-expensive
5. WTF-was-I-thinking-expensive

A Big Red, F/R upgrade with min. size wheels/tires could be a 4. The newest ceramic brake option and/or CGT brakes would be a 5.

It might go something like this in the Denny's/IHOP/Dunkin' Donuts parking lot:

Joe: "Hey, I like that new ________ on your car. What does a setup like that cost?"

Me (nonchalantly): "Five, but it's ________ (pick one: shiny, red, shiny AND red, the latest, groovy, less than my mortgage, light, carbon fiber-like, the same as on Jay Leno's tank car, got Vasek Polak's/Steve McQueen's/Ferry Porsche's/Mama Cass' name on it." etc.).

Sherwood,
The expensive part is when an axial mount caliper needs machining to change it into a radial mount. All of the 4 piston calipers from 944, 964 and 993 that are plentiful and cheap these days need that expensive work to fit on the front w/ decent size rotors. IF you start w/ a radial mount like the Boxster or 993 or 996 you do avoid that issue, but then you run into other issues like a rotor w/ an appropriate thickness and diameter.

Additionally the Boxster caliper per se doesn't get you much if any improvement over plain old vanilla Carrera fronts. But does cost significantly more money.

First sorry for the hijacking... I just need bill for a second.

Bill,

How have you been. I have a customer with a mystery caliper. I have a few pics for you and was wondering if you could identify it for me. It is similar to the 993 fronts like the C-2, and Big red, but is kind of a cross between the two. It uses the C-2 pad, but it mounts up high like the Big red. I am going to try and put one pic in this PM. You can see it is the C-2 caliper body, but the bolt holes have spacers built in.. see how only about four threads of that 72mm mounting bolt stick out the bottom.... on a big red at least ten threads stick out, and I think about 12-14 stick out the C-2 calipers..... Is this a 99RS4 VIN 93-94 RS America Caliper?? That is my only guess.

Thanks for any help,
Dave Walsh

Nope they are on a SC now... I was just trying to figure out what they were. We modified the block so the calipers will live on...

Paul if your reading now you know.

Thanks Bill
