SSIs and Operating Temps

Just picked up my 83SC this morning - SSIs and a 2-in/2-out Monty muffler added. Very sweet sounding. Interesting, it is loudest between idling and 3k on the tach. Above 3k, I hear more mechanical sound and far less muffler growl.

My question: should this set up result in slightly lower operating temps? In fact, I think I noticed the temp rising a bit faster once I hit stop and go traffic, and longer idling periods at lights, etc. What is the experience of others with adding SSIs with pipes going directly to the muffler. For sure, the rear deck is warmer, now that the cat is no longer present.

The stock Porsche muffler, and to some extent the heat exchangers, are more insulated than your new units. They are also heavier. The new system will heat up faster because of this. If you are concerned try to maximise the ventillation under the hood and be sure the muffler tips exit well past the bodywork on your car. This is probably not a real problem unless it is very hot where you live.

Chuck,
I put SSIs w/ the stock Porsche muffler on my 80. I thought the car warmed up faster, too. Interesting. Other people have written that the car would run cooler w/ SSIs, but I didn't find that to be the case.

The cars next to you might be hearing more sound than you are above 3K! I thought the same thing as you until I opened 'er up next to another car or two. The sound bouncing off nearby cars indicated that the car is plenty loud under WOT above 3K! But it's a nice kinda loud! : ) It was higher-pitched, rather than the deeper bass you hear at lower revs.

I think I am noticing a pattern on the temps - with the new SSI/Monty set up, temps appear to be cooler on the highway than with the stock exhaust system; however, at long idles, it is definitely getting hotter faster. But flipping on the oil cooler fan brings the temp right back down.

I am taking the baby to Summit Point tomorrow for the "Friday at the Track (FATT) session. Looking forward to see if the extra ponies are apparent on the track.
