Is it possible to remove the cooling shrouds without removing the cylinder heads?

The chain rattle on my right bank seems to gradually disappear as the engine temp rises until somewhere around 240 deg. which at that point is almost totally diminished. How can the engine temperature cause the chain to stop making noise?

How much torque is required to remove a head stud assuming that I gently use a torch to heat the case to free the loctite? Is it possible to loosen the stud from the side using something like Vice grips?

I had the car on the hobby shop lift yesterday looking things over and trying to get up the nerve to drop the engine.
I found a hydraulic transmission jack that was rated for 1000lbs and I think it will work for the purpose of balancing and lowering the motor. The floor jacks they have are cheap and wimpy and I dare not trust one of those things but the tranny jack is pretty heavy duty (plus it has those jack screws for pitch and yaw). Also I looked at a few of the engine stands they had sitting around. They were the generic, universal, four point jobs that look very similar to the one pictured in Mackgoos very cool engine thread. I think they will work fine.

Ok...last question...

Assuming all goes well with the drop...after I have it lowered and out from under the car I am wanting to mount it on one of these engine stands. The way my father and I always did it was by picking up the motor with an engine hoist and mating it to the engine stand. My question is: where is a safe place to bolt a chain to the motor to lift it with the engine hoist? On american V8s you just use the studs on the intake manifold or carb but I haven't the faintest idea how to safely lift a 911 engine. Any suggestions?

Thanks and I will keep you posted!

Most people just attach the yoke to the engine while it is sitting on the ground, and then use 3 people to lift it onto the stand! 2 musclemen can do it, but its much easier with 3.
Before you drop the engine, be sure to detach the shift linkage (under the cover plate, on the floor of the back seat area) unless you want to to a trans rebuild, too!

Leland, just happen to have a picture of that operation. You can use one of the motor mount bolts (front) and one of the tranny mount bolts (rear). Never mind the junkyard looking background in this picture, just barrowing a big hoist.
