Advice for SC erratic idle

I've read lots of threads regarding 911SC's (and others) with erratic idle problems. My car is a 82SC Euro and a surging idle plagued the life out of me for about 1 1/2yrs until I finally decided to do something about it. Basically the car would start from cold OK, run well for 5 mins or so, then idle surge until it stalls. It was particularly bad in winter, but not so in warmer weather!. Warm-up regulator I hear you say.

Wrong!

After reading many tech articles and obtaining much professional advice, I was about to embark on Warm Up Regulator replacement, Aux Air Valves, etc. However, one day I was out in the car and it stalled at a junction (as usual). Tried to start it again and the starter was dead. Tried to jump start from another car. Still dead. Replacement battery obtained and car started fine. Not only that, but the surging idle had gone and has been ok for over a year now!

Problem was a battery that was on it's way out. For 1 1/2yrs ?? - seemingly so, the battery had hung on and on with a damaged cell. The alternator working flat out to charge battery, means little else left for other high current items (like WUR). Alternator had been checked OK, by the way.

So here's some more advice, don't neglect the simple things and get your battery checked first. And the good news is, it's absolutely free !!!

Your experience is precisely one of the reasons I like to use Ammeters on the older vehicles like my old '68 Mopar to continuously evaluate the condition of the electrical system! An alternator continuously charging after warmup is definitely an indicator of a problem, though the mfr's tell us the public was 'confused' by Ammeters! And, yes, a battery with one shorted cell will operate a long time before dying!

Warren, aren't Ammeters supposed to be dangerous? I thought that is why manufacturers went with voltmeters.
Or am I thinking of something else?

I know of no specific danger associated with Ammeters, though there are plenty of idiots out there in the world that can break anvils and hammers ... if given the opportunity!
Personally, I would like to see a combination gauge with Voltmeter and Ammeter in every new vehicle, but it won't EVER happen, not even in a future Porsche model!
