9" rear flares and rim width

Does the term 9" flares actually mean that these will allow the rear fenders to accomodate rims that are 9" wide? I am beginning a project to convert a 72' 911T to a 73' Carrera RS look-alike, so I need to know what width rims the 9" flares actually accomodate. Also, what is the maximum width stock front fenders will accomodate ( I believe the early RS's had flares only on the rear.

Any help will be appreciated.

I believe there were two flare packages offered with the 73 RS. The sport version had 8-inch wheels in the back and 7-inch wheels in the front. The (more common) touring version only had rear flares, with 7-inch wheels in the back (and the stock six-inchers in front), but could accomodate (with rolling the inside lip of the fenders) 8's and 7's.

There was also an Carrera RSR, which I beleive had 9's and 8's.

DISCLAIMER: All that is based on an article I remember reading a long time ago -- so if I'm wrong, I hope someone will correct me.

Hi Guys,
The '73 RS came from the factory standard with 6 and 7 inch rims. Sometime in the beginning of '73, the 8 inch rims were homologated for that car by the FIA.
The 7/8 combo was only an option.
For the anecdote, every one of the 500 first cars was weighed at the Stuttgart scales for homologation purposes. This involved first assembling every car as a "homologation" example, with 6 and 6 inch rims, no rear anti-roll bar, a fixed passenger seat and some more light stuff. The cars were then re-assembled at the factory as per order sheet, into a lightweight or touring model (RSL for luxus). Only 16 cars were delivered as homologation examples.
So as standard, 6 and 7 inch rims,
As option 7 and 8 inch rims

7" rims fit comfortable up front. 9" will fit under 9" flares or SC flares. I know a guy with 8" wheels up front but he has to run a lot of negative camber and it sure looks like the wheels will rub but they don't with his stiffer springs. The 8" rear 944 turbo wheels have a better ofset for the 911 wheels for the front of a 911
