Not sure about the general market, but to me original is worth more.

I don't believe a '72 911 ever came with gas burners. Just Fuchs and cookie cutters.

Depends upon how the job is done to get the car to RS clone specs, but the problem there is that the money invested will probably not come back out in the end. '72 911T targa, probably not worth tons really. If it's in spectacular shape then some folks might be willing to pay a ton, but on it's own merits, probably not that collectible. "Original" gas burners? I thought they were aftermarket in the period.

In the long run, I'd go for the matching #s T with the gas burners - those wheels are becoming more desirable to collectors. An RS clone will appeal to many as well, but so many older originals have been given the RS treatment, the numbers are getting scarcer everyday.
Ask yourself this question: have you ever seen a '50 Mercury WITHOUT a chopped roof? They may no longer exist, and if they do, I bet money the owner has either contemplated doing it or will tell the buyer how cool it would be that way.

Yeah, Davenport actually. Believe it or not, I used to live just north of Hamilton on the River Road, halfway to Nauvoo! Small world.

No clue. There's a few 911 owners in Davenport, but a lot more in Iowa City.

How do you make an RS clone starting with a targa ?

I'd say original, as well... A coupe mightmake a decent clone, but these days all original will get you your money back and then some !

Change everything to RS spec. wheel flares, hot rod engine, fiberglass, maybe lexan rear window. The only difference is that it would have a targa top instead of a hard top. RS clone these days is often a reference to similar mechanical spec (hot rod engine and suspension) and body (flares and f/g) and interior (RS style) and maybe 15" Fuchs.

That was tongue in cheek. I think a nicely made RS clone is nice, but based on a coupe. An RS targa would look a bit goofy, to me at least..
And given the skyrocketing prices for early longhoods, original wins, I think !

thanks for the replys about the targa issue. I guess i made it sound like i was considering building a rs replica. what i really mean is a modern sc/930 look with the wide flairs, the nose, the fuch wheels, and a duck tail in place of the turbo tail.
so basicly a turbo look without the turbo tail and a rs/duck tail in its place.

Well, ultimately, it is your car, you do absolutely what you want to it...
I think that an early car made to look like a 930 has a very very small market for resale, and it will cost you a fortune. If the car is sound, you are much better off selling it and buying the SC/930 that you want. Not to mention you will get a stiffer body and better handling in the process. These days, most people are buying cars such as you plan to build, and removing all the fluff to go back to the original look ! I cannot count the number of early cars in my area that were "converted" to later car look that are not selling !!

A nice early Targa can fetch anywhere from $10 to 30K depending on year and model ! I just bought a nice SC for $9000... if you know what I mean ;-) I think your 72T targa is easily selleable for the price of a decent SC or early 3.2 carrera, and you get the flares and 100 hp for free.

I'm with you, an RS Clone from a Targa would be a hard sell to say the least. Targa's vs. eqivalent coupes don't seem to be all that easy to sell to begin with. Keep it original and it will be worth the most.

No book value on "clones". Totally subjective. Your market is narrowed too since you've personalized it.

O R I G I N A L works best on an original car.

Best,

Tom

As a wild estimate, figure 1/3 of the cost to build a clone will be recouped if you ever sell it.

Thanks for the replys, I really think i will leave it original, but i do plan to get aanother deck lid to put on the car with a duck tail, and pull the gas burners in favor of safe keeping and some more attractive (imo) Fuch wheels.

Clone cars are like jerking off and telling yourself you got laid. Stock is best.
