OT - for California guys only - license plate question
Hey, been a while since I lived in California. I seem to remember that the plates traferred with owners. Seemed to me that that used to be a selling point on a car if the plates were fairly new. Am I remembering this correctly. Just trying to figure out how soon I ned to register here in TN... typically we have 30 days.

Plates stay with the car, unless they're custom and then I think the seller has the option of retaining them.
Hope this helps. Ron

Actually the other way around...if the plates are OLD...like blue (70s) background or Black (60s) ...or even older...Yellow (50s)....that's a selling point.
CA DMV can be a pain in retianing the older plates if they were non op'd for awhile or if you went out of state.....the Q Tip crowd really looks down on a early car with later plates...

Technically, you have ten days. It's hard for them to monitor this unless you bought the car here and the seller turned in the paperwork IDing you as the buyer. The fine is minimal unless you let the tags expire. AAA just informed me that they would process my registration up to 30 days w/o a problem, even though I bought the car within the state and have a dated bill of sale stating the lower sales price than the standard blue book assesment, which is equal to your local sales tax rate.
