Arrow A/C Help on 1987 Carrera.

My A/C fan stopped working in my car last week. I turn the fam switch on the center console but no fan noise or air from the vents. I had no problem before this winter. I have a completely upgraded A/C kit from Rennaire, professionally installed 12 months ago. I have checked the fuses - all look in order. Any Ideas? Can I assume it is the fan? The car is a 1987 Carrera with 80K. The fan is factory original.

Thanks Mark

Can you hear the A/C clutch engage? Should sound like a large click coming from the A/C compressor.

Have you checked the relay in the smugglers box?

might just be the evaporator fan - they are not long lasting - and it's going on 21 years if original

The simple test is to pull the connector to the fan motor. Put 12 volts (fused) to the motor and ground the brown wire. If it pumps air it is OK, If not you need a new motor.

When they did the upgrade did they install a new fan motor? Most likely not, if it was working. My fan quit several years ago. It was just a bad fan motor. If you are patient the top of the housing can be removed without opening the system. Just remove the clips and it all comes apart. It is a pain in the posterior. Ask me how I know. Getting the clips back on it no fun but possible. Been there done that.

I turned the fan switch on and the compressor clutch did not engage. Does this change anything? The fan was not replaced during the A/C UPGRADE. Is the fan in smuglers box? Where is a good place to buy a replacement in case it is bad? Pelican?

Try direct connecting a power supply (12V) (fused) to the fan located in the smugglers box - you can do this pretty simply and if it comes on, then its the switch. If it doesn't come on, then it's the fan.

And yes, you can get replacement fans at Pelican.

The clips are a pain in the a$$ to replace in the smugglers box - but not impossible. Several folks have left the clips off and installed screws in their place.

This indicates to me that the whole A/C system is not getting power. I would investigate the fuse block again, and use a schematic to trace the voltage and find where the path is broken. I'd bet there's something going on at or near the fuse block.
