72' 911T brake caliper rebuild question
72’ 911T question number 2…I need to rebuild the calipers on this car. The brakes appear to be stock with vented rotors. When inquiring for rebuild kits today, I ran into confusion as to which rotors are on this vehicle. As I said, it has vented rotors and the calipers have the following information in the castings:
Fronts – what appears to be the letters “Ate 64” Rears – what appears to be the letters “Ate P 17R” A couple of parts suppliers advised the rotors in the 72’ model year came from different sources, thus the kits are for specific OEM supplier’s product. Can anyone point me in a direction as to which manufacturer produced these calipers? |

I guess the only real confusion was in the 'mind' of the sales person you spoke to! All of the 911 calipers are made by the 'ATe' folks (Alfred Teves) and in the case of your 'T,' both front and rear are 'M' calipers, 48 mm bore forthe fronts, 38 mm for the rears ... all; data straight from the factory '72-'73 'spec book' ... same size pads are used front and rear!

If you're interested, the stock brake pads for the rear of a VW bug will fit the disc brakes of the '73T and other early 911s. May save a few bucks.

With all due respect, I would never under any circumstances fit anything other than Porsche or Porsche recommended brake pads.
While the VW units may be identical, it may also be that the pad material is different. Remember, the last system you should cut corners on is your tyres and your brakes. It really is only a few dollars difference but it might save your life! - roGER (ranting on the soap-box) |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall VW bugs ever having rear discs (any year). The Super Beetles had front discs, as did Karmann Ghias and Type 3's, but never Type 1 Bugs from the factory (unless he means the New Beetle?) I owned a '74 (stock), and a '65 (not even close to stock), and restored a Ghia with my brother, so VW's are near and dear to me-but rear discs? Uh-uh.

VW FRONT DISC pads fit the early 911. I didn't figure I would have to clearify that. I know this to be true 'cause I used them on my '73T. There was asolutely no danger involved - this car could hardly get out of its' own way. If your car has a hi-po motor then buy good pads. Mine was a 2.4L with Webers and headers, a 150HP turd.

A couple of comments about brake pads ...
I happen to like the Repco 'Metal Master' replacement pads' minimal squeal, nice firm feel but not 'grabby,' highly fade resistant, long life, etc. First used them on my 911 in 1978, and have since put them on VW's, BMW's, and Mercedes, for friends and relatives ... no complaints! And, believe me, some of my relatives are HARD to please when it comes to brake noises! Back in the '70's Mercedes used to use some EXTREMELY soft pads, presumably to be quiet for all of those doctors and lawyers that used to buy them as status symbols. One result was also very fast wear characteristics ... some owners have written in to Road & Track complaining of pad life as short as 6000 miles! The Metal Masters lasted about twice as long as OEM in one of my lawyer's cars, produced less dust, and stopped 'quicker,' with few complaints about noise. The lower cost was really not a factor, it was longer life that was the goal, and it was achieved. YMMV ... ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
