Nice look at a CGT
I went to my local dealer this past weekend b/c I needed an oil filter and fuel filter ASAP. I got to talking to the parts sales guy who was very nice. He went back to get my parts and I was trying to look through a tinted window that looked into a smaller 2 bay work area.
The closest rack had a 996 Cab on it and was blocking the view of the second car but per the wheel it had to be a CGT. Since the parts guy was very nice (something not typical of this dealership) I asked if it was a CGT. His eyes lit up and he said yhea you wanna go look at it. Sure! He told me his customer bought it with a salvaged title from a insurance sale. The PO had downshifted past a couple of gears, over reeving the engine, and separating a piston. They had a new engine on order. The car was also ran off the road at the time of this driver error. The parts guys customer had just ordered a new wheel, rotor, and caliper at the cost of $28,000 before taxes! It just amazes me the cost of such items on such a car. How different can a CGT wheel be over a normal 911 wheel is beyond me? Anyway I kind of chuckled at the cost and said that I would stick to my SC for now at least. I do have to admit it was a nice treat to be able to go over and under and set in a CGT.

GT's are equipped with PCCCB's which are around 9k each, but for some reaon I think the Carrera Gt's have special or larger PCCB's so the cost may be even more so I'm thinking around 11k.
But 28-11=17k for a wheel. That seems extremely pricey even for a race tire included.

That's funny. My wife just called and told me that we wouldn't need to go to the Chicago auto show this winter after all, since she'd found our new car: a Carrera GT. After the kids are grown, she's let me know that she'd like an old Acura NSX. But she said this looks better....
She and my 5 year old son were at the local (Napleton Westmont) dealer (don't know why - but my birthday is this weekend!) and she said she asked one of the salesmen how many people a Cayenne sat - he said "seven" and then laughed and said "five" and that there wasn't a third row option (which she knew). She then told him she'd like to put a down payment on the CGT. He laughed, and wasn't sure if she was kidding. Good for her! Anyway, glad to know that she's still OK with an SUV. If we got (or could remotely afford!) a CGT, my 911 would have to be the family truckster - and my daughter is pushing over 5 ft tall these days, so the backseat won't work much longer! |

I thought so too but then I didnt really question the guy on the cost. Either way the cost has through the roof.

The prices are close to NASA levels b/c the technology envelope and production levels are close to that. You cannot spread the engineering, R&D costs over 10,000 vehicles with a Mars Rover or with a C-GT. And you are paying top dollar for top technology. The C-GT wheel is MG and the Rover has flexible metal spokes of some sort.
A 3rd factor is that Wienie King is not about to let the C-GT lose money like the 959 did. Leffingwell's book describes how "Wendy" was aghast when he had his accountants pore over the 959 books. The idea today is to let the customers pay for the R&D on advanced vehicle designs up front. In 10 to 20 years that technology will trickle down into a $50,000 Boxster, just as the 959 technology went into the 964 & 993, etc. This is where Honda and Toyota have a big advantage over Porsche - they can fund the techno-edge and amortize the cost over more vehicles. The Prius may not have the dynamics we all want but it is a very high tech vehicle. And there's more to come.

The wheels on CGT are made of magnesium and cost $7,000 per wheel. The wheels are held inplace by 1 very large nut and it requires 400+ lbs of torque. A special torque multiplier had to be used and of course only dealers have these.

This view only shows $56K worth of wheels, rotors and calipers. ![]() Sherwood |
