RSR clone status
Hello everyone,
It's been a while since I've posted progress on my car. Well, it is now painted, so it's nice to see it in ONE color. http://www.readynet.com/porsche/IMG_7191.JPG After much deliberation against adding weight back on, I decided to add sound-deadener. The M&K exhaust will be plenty loud. Here is a picture of the sound deadener, it looks easy but anything that's not flat will take some time to shape and glue down. http://www.readynet.com/porsche/IMG_7652.JPG http://www.readynet.com/porsche/IMG_7670.JPG Here is a picture with the carpet padding installed: http://www.readynet.com/porsche/IMG_7888.JPG Yesterday, I picked up the 3.2 from the machine shop with fresh exhaust valves, guides, new rings and supertec head studs. http://www.readynet.com/porsche/IMG_7979.JPG http://www.readynet.com/porsche/IMG_8005.JPG Brakes waiting to be installed. http://www.readynet.com/porsche/IMG_6993.JPG I still have a long way to go and hope to have it finished by next year in the spring/summer time frame. How time flies, started in Aug of '05  I'll keep you posted... cheers http://www.readynet.com/porsche/IMG_8019.JPG |
WOW! :)

Thank you all for the kind words.
There's plenty of inspirational cars in this forum and lots of good archival and new data. I can't tell you how many times I've hit the "search" button :) |
Thanks for sharing...Did you fab the 'through the hood' gas filler pipe?
|
How and what did you use to transport the tub? Details please...
|
looks good, can't wait for more pictures!
|
The first picture looks really intimidating just given the possibilities....
|
Good work.
Im looking forward to see it when the Martini Stripes are on.. |
That is the dirtiest garage I've ever seen. ;)
Nice work! Looking forward to the finished product. Tom |
The filler pipe was fabricated from a 4 inch round stainless steel exhaust piece, picked it up
at a muffler shop. I probably should've used a galvanized piece but the stainless should do fine. We cut the tube to about 15 inches and welded it to the tank. Make sure you have the tank cleaned and no fumes. A good radiator shop should be able to do this. We also welded a tab on the rear/top of the tank that bolts down to the chasis, this should help the tank to stay in one position and not bang the opening on the hood (at least we hope that won't happen). Another thing to keep in mind is the gasoline splashing and possibly flowing all the way to the top and spilling out the cap, nobody wants gasoline on top of their hood... We'll see how it all works out. Please look HERE for additional pics The tub was transported with very little suspension and rolling wheels. At the sanblasting place they allowed me to take all suspension off and put it aside until they were done. At pick-up time, the suspension was bolted up again and rolled into a tow truck. Same deal at the painter's, although the suspension didn't have to come all the way off. Just enough for them to paint the areas. I bought a quart of paint to touch up any missed spots under the car. If you plan it well ahead of time you could find a towing services with fork-lifts to load and unload a tub, but some shops are not setup to take on a tub, at least the body shop I used wasn't. The epoxy-coated garage floor if pretty durable... except when you bang it with a hammer, use brake cleaner or pb-blaster (ask me how I know!) Brake cleaner will take the epoxy clear layer and pb- blaster will stain the floor. I'll probably have the clear coate re-shot when I'm done. Thanks for all the words of encouragement... if you have any tips or lessons learned for what's ahead please let me know. |
I was going to ask about the flooring it looks almost like industrial covering. looks great
|
Thanks... the floor was spotless when the garage queen http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/princess.gif lived there. Not so much any more. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/smash.gif
I sold the 993 to buy and build the RSR clone... I miss it, it was a fun car to drive, and it was cheaper too! http://www.readynet.com/cars/993.jpg |
Fernando,
Are you sure you welded stainless to mild steel? That seems odd? I've actually never heard of that. Doug |
Hmmmm... now you've got me thinking.
Could the pipe/tube have been just polished? I believe they told me it was stainless steel. My buddy who's got a bunch of experience welding did a great job. Below is a picture of the pipe and the welds. In fact, the over-flow receptacle you see is a cooking pot! It was so thin, it crackled all the way, but no leaks :) http://www.readynet.com/porsche/IMG_5665.JPG http://www.readynet.com/porsche/IMG_5683.JPG |
I think it might be chromed mild steel.
Doug |
try sticking a magnet on it - stainless has far less iron (thats why it doesn't corrode) in it and is much less magnetic. you can weld stainless to cold rolled steel.
|
I tried the magnet test and it stuck pretty well.
As you suspected, it's probably chromed mild steel. Thanks for the info in figuring this out. Anyone with plans to fab a center fill would be better served using average galvanized pipe instead of what I used. The tank was shot with line-x so you can't really see any of the chrome. |
Very nice Fernando. What a great project!
|
I looked at getting one of those "BBS wheel"wall clocks but they are damned hard to see the time!
|
You can weld SS to steel using stainless rod (wire). That's gonna be a beautiful car when your done Fernando!
Good Luck! |
Hey Fernando.....Your car looks incredible! That is gonna be a screamin machine. Cant wait to see it when you are done. Maybe I could stop by and check it out sometime.
|
Jamie,
You'd be doing me a favor if you came by :) Your car is one of my favorites and would like to check out all your mods. My front suspension is at Jae's (Mirage Intl) and I'm still not sure which way to go on the rear suspension. I'll PM you my phone number and we can hook up one of these weekends. |
Wow ... I checked out the rest of your pictures ....makes my sympathetic restoration look very sad. Oh well maybe in a couple of years when I find more time. Very nice job! Very Nice!
