'86 power window loud click problem

I have an '86 911 with power windows. Recently when I start to put down the passenger window, it makes a very loud popping noise like someone is banging on the outside of the glass with the window up. It's very loud, makes the noise every time, and yet there seems to be no ill effects so far. It makes this noise when it is about 2 inches down from all the way up and never at any other point. I've tried jiggling with the window when it's half down to see if it's loose in the tracks but it doesn't seem like it is. Anybody else ever have this problem and know the fix?

I'd hone in on your regulator. Probably one of the wheels came off of the regulator mechanism. You have to take the door panel off to have a look.

Or it just may be a mounting bolt (regulator to door frame) that has backed-off and under load it moves.

Plan on taking the door panel and plastic membrane off and grab a flash light to find the cause.

RicoJay13,

The same thing (I think) just happened with my 85 carrera's driver side windows yesterday! I was searching for an explanation and possible solution on the BBS.

With mine, I heard the noise when the window was going down from the closed position. The noise was really loud, sounded like something broke. Hoping that the window still moved, I pressed on the switch and the window rolled up all the way. So the window is at the closed position now, and as I am afraid to do more damage, I have not moved it since then. I am not sure if this noise will occur everytime or not.

RicoJay13,

I found this thread:

Part found inside driver door - What is it?

It may be applicable to you... maybe to me... good luck!
