Turn signals off, High Beams on

That says it. On my '82 SC when the turn signals cancel the high beams turn on. I'm always flashing the high beams when turning at night. This happens with both a left and right turns.

Is there a repair / fix for the combo switch that involves springs and contacts or whatever or is it an R&R with a used one?

What are the tricks? Is the wiring harness plug and play at the switch end or is it a fishing expedition?

Help, insights and experiences please before I jump in.

Thanks

the section of the switch that does the hi/low switching is getting old. there is a procedure to tweek the large bar that moves the smal brass contacts. a search should turn up details and pics. if that doesn't work, just put a new switch in.

Do a search here on the board. Many people have repaired the contacts in the switch. When mine went bad, I simply replaced it. It's not a difficult job at all, but there are a bunch of wires that go from the turn signal/brights switch to the headlight switch. If you're going to replace the turn signal/brights switch, be sure you remove and replace each of those wires one at a time.

A search for the terms "turn signal high beam" should turn up the thread you need. It is in the 911 forum. It even has pictures.

My 78SC did the same thing, if I had my lights on , they would automatically switch to high beams without touching the turn signal switch. My solution was a new turn signal switch.
NO MORE PROBLEM..

I never had luck fixing my turn signal switch, but until the new one arrived in the mail I cut a short piece from a chopstick and zip tied it to the turn signal lever. You lose high beams, but at least you don't end up flashing people. It'll do until you can replace the old switch.

Here is the thread,

Headlight dimmer repair?

A very quick fix (temporary) is just to pull the highbeam fuse.....no more high beam!

And....are the lack of relays for the headlights part of the cause? or is it just mechanical wear?

Thanks to all who responded and pointed me in the right direction and included the links. This is exactly what I was looking for.

I will update after the fix on my success. Hopefully!

I have the link saved as well. I've got the inevitable 'while you're there' syndrome, so I'm waiting to replace the stock wheel before fixing this...

Without the relays installed, all the current drawn by the headlights flows through the stalk switch, eventually burning it out.

this is caused by wear, not by burning out.
