Testing the oil temps sender ?

Ok, dumb question of the month, I was overdue anyway !

I removed my oil temps sender on the 83 and left the wire connected (to the gauge). Dipped it in boiling water, and got a big fat nothing on the gauge... (ignition ON, of course). Should this dummy have grounded it somehow ? If so, where, on the big copper tube portion ? It's kinda hard to do that because you don't have much room for the water, the wire, and dipping it without immersing the whole sender + wires, especially in the engine compartment, I might extend the wires a bit if that's the problem... I bet it's the grounding!

I ended up putting the new sender anyway, what the hell ;- )

PS: Is there another way, like measuring the resistance of the thing? What readings should I expect ?

----------------------------------------------------

Can't delete the post: it was grounding, silly me... I reads about right, boiling water reached 90C on the gauge, 10 short of boiling point, but by the time I conducted the experiment it probably had cooled a bit... No matter, I was hoping for the opposite result anyway !

So, it's not the front cooler (there is flow), it's not the sender, it's not the timing or the fan belt, and I am still running too hot ;-( Running out of ideas...

Quite all right, I am a moron too for not grounding it, and the site is also moronic for not letting me delete my own posts when I am logged in properly ;-)
