Jeep Cherokee Cap and Rotor on a 3.2

This conversion allows the use of conventional HEI ignition wires without the need of modifying the cap connectors or boots to fit a Beru cap.

Delayed post 10/24/06:

I'm not sure how to do that set-up for myself, but it looks like it's worth doing.

Lot easier than twin plugging. It just takes a little time and ingenuity.

It may work great, but it looks like something that Macguyver did.
The jbwelded rotors and the stacked caps, I just don't know.

I read your thread about running with a .060 gap. I didn't think that my old 3.2 really ran that bad that it needed the little boost.

I think I'll stick with the original design, thanks. Looks less expensive in the long run.

The British Royal Family had an infusion of German Blood in 1714 with Hanoverian King George. Later, Chrysler bought Daimler but Daimler really bought Chrysler. And now this.

How is that an alternative to twin plugging?

stlrj , did you get a full two driving seasons out of this set up? How well did it hold up? What other changes/improvements are in the works?

If Porsche thought like these guys we would still be driving rear engined air-cooled cars.

Oh wait a minute.............................

The way I see it, you get two 0.028"spark kernals in twin plugging at different locations, of course, compared to one giant 0.060" spark kernal to light things off.

Just a differnt way of looking at it...and considering the cost, a worthy ignition upgrade before taking more complicated routes.

Cheers,

Joe

So far, it seems to be holding out very well and hopfully as well as my Grand Caravan and Concorde that never have ignition issues considering their 100k+ miles on original plugs and wires.

Cheers,

Joe

I argree with Noah....

twin plugging gets around the problem ( among other things)...like domed pistons that cut into the flame front...and how two plugs on either side of the "split dome" will work, ....while a "bigger" offset-located spark won't....

but the benefits to two spark plugs has much less to do with the total size of the spark in the combustion chamber as it does with the offset nature of the two plugs and the staggered timing of the two sparks.
Understood. However, there are benefits to having a larger spark kernal in any combustion chamber.

Cheers,

Joe

Thought experiment: how would an otherwise stock 3.6 engine perform -- and how long would it last -- if only one plug was installed in each cylinder, albeit with a .060" gap?
It would never work in the first place since the stock ignition wires would not be capable of the higher voltages required to jump the 0.060" plug gap and even if it could, the engine would not perform as designed.

But put that same 0.060" plug gap in an engine designed for a single plug, now you have the benefits of better more complete combustion and driveabilty including low end response.

Cheers,

Joe

So your saying your driveability is enhanced with this setup.

Interesting.

How about using a MSD set up? I have been playing around with spark gaps on my hot rod 3.0 and have used a .060 gap with no problem.

Yes, but a Ty-Rap is so much less expensive.

Wouldn't it be fun to be out in the desert when the tie-wrap or JB Weld decides to let go? NOT!

Good idea....but in my book WAY to risky.

There is some merit here. I found a gut who does all kinds of distributor conversions. I have one that incorporates a Ford module in a small diameter small block Chevy dizzy. That's one of his specialties. When talking to him about my 914 engine a few years ago, he immediately thought a Pontiac Tempest Cap and rotor could be adapted rather easily with a small amount of work on the lathe. I've also read about Jag V12 caps for the twin plug single dizzys. Seems to me the thought is good even if the execution is somewhat jackleg. But, that's how things get tested.

Now, go make a proper adaptor. You might have something then.

I'm still not clear on how it allows you to make a bigger spark? I'm assuming that the cap terminals are approximately the same size and you didn't really do anything to the igniition system to make a bigg spare go through the distrib, so I just don't get why it works.

Did you have to upgrade to magnacores to handle the extra power however you produced it?

I'm not poo pooing your idea, I just don't understand it.

Yes, he uses different wires, from a Chrysler actually.
