Targa Top Recovering

Has anyone ever re-covered their Targa top?

I have heard this can be a pretty nightmarish experience, but have also seen articles that explain it pretty clearly.

Can the average competent human take care of this task or should I drop the big coin and have a pro do it?

Does anyone have any thoughts on which material seems to work the best and have the best value?

Thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks. Ian 1972 911T Targa

I just recovered my top last weekend. It took two days to complete. I bought a new vinyl cover from Vertex in Miami. It was one of the least expensive places. I was very satisfied witht hte quality.

As far as recovering, it was more work than I expected but not too much. Most of the extra work was in replacing the canvas and foam under the vinyl. the PO let the car sit outside for a long time(aobut 4 years) and the vinyl was completly unglued exposing the foam. I thought if I was careful I could save it. Too many days outside spoiled that idea. I found headliner foam and canvas at a local fabric store. It took the most time to locate these parts. I found some sites that outlined replacing the top. A couple of hours and a few cans of 3M spray adhesive is all y ou need.

Here are some hints that will improve the outcome. fit the top and glue the front edge in the center about 6in wide. Then put the top in the sun(30 min) you will then be able to stretch the sides and glue them. make sure the rails are not locked out. then strech and glue the remaider of the front edge and finish with the rear edge.

I am glad I saved the money. It may not last as long but I can redo it at least 5 times for what it would cost to have someone recover it. Hope this helps.

I used a company in Pontiac Michigan to replace my Targa Top cover. Total cost $150 and the top is perfect. Call information for the number. The business is called Pauls Trim and Tops - Pontiac Michigan. He does many tops and interiors for local PCA members. good luck!
