Your easiest 911 upgrade
As a newbie on this site, I can't come close to posting pictures of my first engine drop (and fortunately, after 2 months of ownership, the engine is still running strong!). So, how about the other end of the spectrum, what was your easiest 911 upgrade?
Mine, so far, has been the decision to order two new rubber boots for the dome light door switches on our 1978 911SC. The driver's side switch needed to be replaced. I ordered a new switch but at the same time, feeling like a big spender, I ordered two new rubber boots to replace the worn, cracked original boots. After replacing the broken switch, with a bit of solder and avoiding losing the wire through the door jamb, the new boots poped right on, and began the first step of my long journey of the major interior restoration that lies ahead. Not bad for 2 x $2.75! And, the postage was free! Now, let's hear of your easiest 911 upgrade. install of fire extinguisher.
|
O.K. THAT WAS HYSTERICAL! Don't trust that wiring job?
Anyway, If you want a real easy nice upgrade, install a Momo leather shift knob. |
get rid of spare tire and jack
|
Put in a nice steering wheel.
|
Jb Welded the shift knob to keep it from spinning everytime I shifted gears!
|
Replace all missing/broken knobs on dash and seats
Upgrade stereo and speakers Re-dye leather seats Replace kick panel blowers Replace hood and engine lid shocks Replace all oil with synthetics Replace catalytic converter with bypass Replace old worn door stays Flush brake fluid All easy and rewarding DIY projects. |
Changed the fittings on the cam oiler fittings to the smaller ones and got about 1 druck of pressure increase at idle. Adjusted the throttle linkage to open complete=free! Shifter bushings, about $30 big difference.

A. Ordered official Porsche rubber-handled key blank to replace all metal pad lock style key,
B. New shift linkage bushings. C. Motor and trans mounts and sound insulation pad. Ron |
Installed bumper plug, cost :free, time: .05 seconds. I cant think of anything easier. Fun game though.......I win.
|
I turned off the stereo, opened the window, and downshifted. Best stereo upgrade ever.
seriously, though; I recovered my door panels and pockets for about $30 with some new vinyl, a staple gun, and a little glue. Looks great and my friends think i'm an upholsterer now. |
Right after buying my 911, taking it in to John Walker for a valve adjust, dial in the timing and CIS and to drive the car for an expert assessment of shifting and braking. Cost me a couple hundred bucks, it ran 1000% better and he gave me a prioritized project list about 10 items long that I could do myself.
Why shoot in the dark when the expert marksman can help you aim? |
We need to clarify the goal here: easy or cheap.
If cheap is our goal than I want to change my answer. The best return on investment was washing my 911. Looked like a new car for about $1.50. |
Mine was adjusting my throttle linkage. You would be surprised how many cars out there aren't getting WOT when the pedal is to the floor.
|
Boattail your mains ;-)
|
Steve Wong Chip, 15 min install ,very effective
|
SW chip and oil change.
Well, air filter must be on top of my list of course. If it wasn´t for the lower, rear clip it would have taken 3 minutes instead of 30. |
new points for the mfi car. gapped to precisely 38 degrees. $12.95
