Mating engine and G50 'box

At some point I will be putting my motor back in my car (88 carrera). I left the tranny in. My question is what is the best procedure for connecting up the release fork once the motor has been made up to the tranny. Should I place the release lever inside the tranny bellhousing? if so how do I ensure that the fingers locate over the tabs on the release bearing once i've made up the engine to the box? I've done this on a a 944 before but it did not have the tabs on the release bearing that had to be located with the release fork fingers, the bearing had a continuous flat area (like a flange) so it was easy to put the release fork in, I can see problems here though. can anyone who's done this give me a few tips.
Thanks
