Assuming its similar to my '87, about 10 - 11 quarts. I usually put in 9, start the engine and let it warm up, then check the level via the dip stick, adding as needed to half way between the low and full marks on the stick. I buy a case of oil so I have some on hand for topping up later.

Here are cut away pictures of a MANN filter I use for the 3.2L and these are very well made internally. Nice pressure relief spring and very hi quality filter material. Maybe others can cut up other brands to compare?

NOT fram
In addition to pushing my dad's old 74 coupe around, I also hammer on an old 77 Ferrari 308, (aluminum, 3 litre dohc w/ 4 2bbl webbers, & a lot of suspension/brake work).
I had done a major before a track day at Thunderhill and I was jambed for time and used the fram. I drove it 200 miles to the track, ran a few sessions, then after being well warmed up, I noticed a BIG drop in oil pressure. After getting it home, I checked the bypass plunger and spring, installed a temporary manual gauge, which confirmed a 50% drop in pressure. I pulled the filter and installed a Baldwin - INSTANT RECOVERY OF OIL PRESSURE. So, I cut the offending pos up and here is the evidence: ![]() ![]() |

"2nd - and perhaps more importantly - unless it clogs, the filter will be more efficient (work better) if you do NOT change it. All filters are more efficient if they have some filtrate on the media than if they are new."
True for particulate capture only. As the particles build up in the filter, the pressure drop across the filter increases there by reducing flow. Total efficiency must take into account particle generation rate, and the required/optimal flow rate to remove those particles from the system.
