glass or oem for race car bumpers
I'm thinking of going with a 964 rs look for the 912-6. Dedicated track car now.
Should I go for fiberglass front and rear bumpers, or find OEM porsche stuff? Whats best for a track only car? Thanks! Idea generator

It's my understanding that all the mounting gear for the OEM would be troublesome for your early body, not to mention the weight. You would have an easier time, IMO, being able to glass/epoxy whatever brackets you need to the back of a FG bumper.
On the other side of the coin, you might be able to get slightly damaged 964 bumpers for a better price. I have similar ideas for a mid year car, but I plan on redoing the lower half to look more like the early S bumper with the splitter, thereby losing the elongated 964 openings. |

Since my body is a 76, I thought the 964 oem stuff would just bolt on.

For a dedicated track car, as long as class rules allow, fiberglass
The reduced polar moment is a remarkable attribute to have.

DE, or racing?
If racing, read the rules and see what's allowed. |

I didn't see the 964 stuff on Shaws website. About 1200 from Rennspeed and 1600 from Getty for a package.
I'm playing in DE right now. I've already "upgraded" my car out of the ranks with the PCA, but I'm pretty sure I'm safe with NASA.

Getty Design makes excellent glass and c/f. Famous for fitting perfectly, and they don't use the "Hey, whaddya want, it's just racecar stuff" excuse.

I have a 964 kit on my car - also ex 912 SWB - looks good, BUT - fitting a front oil cooler is problematic, needing bodywork cutting on the front of the tub and a very low cooler mounting to use the standard air vents on the front, or cutting out the number plate area on the bumber - which makes me think FG will be best for this as it can easily be reinforced around the cut.

weld 4130 steel NERF BARS front and rear. saves tub in event of crash. glass will be toast but tub should survive. simple and you dont see them.

The 964 OEM front bumper will 'bolt' onto your 76 912E. However, you will need all the brackets. If you were to race the car in PCA F or G class car, the additional weight of the OEM vs Fiberglass is not a factor since you the car has to weight ~2700 LBS. However, the advantage to the OEM stuff is crash protect vs fiberglass. The fiberglass stuff would have less polar momentum.
If the car is just going to be a DE car, then obviously, less weight vs added crash protection.

Update.
I now have glass front and rear bumpers, and oem side rockers, from another Pelican. Have to complete some work on the wifes targa before I can install though. Next question is what splitter should I use on the front? I've seen two piece and one piece designs. I'll be using my duck on the back for now.
