Help diagnose '88 Carrera central locking problem

Did a search, found some info, but not spot on with my problem. There seem to be many ways for the system to fail!

Here's what it does:

Neither door will lock, either by the key in the handle (either side), or the push button in the center console.

You can hear it clicking in both doors when you use the key or the center console button, but it won't lock.

If you manually lock both doors from the inside (it's a cab so that's easy to do with the top down), and press the center console button or use the key, both doors will unlock as they should.

Normally, when you start the car, the doors lock themselves. That's not working, either.

Any thoughts?

That's not the norm, nor a factory option.

Do you have a after market keyless entry?

Auto lock on startup is not normal. My 87 does not do this.

I also have an '89 and the doors do not lock automatically in any way. I just have a choice of using the button in my lower center console or turning the knob on the door......

Thanks, Luis :p

Sounds like you need to pop both door panels and see what's going on inside. I had similar problems and it was a broken ball cup for the linkage.

Me too... I replaced my linkage with the later model carrera arms. No more worn out elbows in the future. My 86 doesn't have an autolocking system either. Sounds aftermarket.

If it is like my 85' there is a relay that is stuffed up in right front firewall area behind the hinge mounted on the inside of the fender. Mine does the same thing except for locking when started. You can hear the relay click but lock the doors. The relay is very hard to see almost just have to feel for it. I have taken the connector off and on several times and that seems to help for a while. If you here the clicking then I would check the relay. Something to check anyhow.....
