Clutch question
I am going to be installing a used 1970 2.2 into my 65 911, It needs a new clutch.
I also have another used 1970 with an older style clutch. The question I have is which one is better to use, I assume the newer one is better. But will the older one work? The new clutch might be almost half the cost that way. It is going to have a newer style 901 tranny. Thanks Bruce |

Bruce,
I'm not sure what you call an 'older style clutch' with resect to a '70' engine ... all clutches and flywheels prior to '70 are different from the '70!!! The 'early style' flywheel is called a 'cup style' and all clutches prior to '70 were 215 mm, and the 'push' type (most common in ALL cars-- NOT like post-'69 911 clutches!!!) ... whereas the '70 and later flywheels are called the 'flat-style' and use a 'pull-type clutch' of 225 mm diameter!!! Hopefully, this makes the situation clear, if not, ask again!!! The determining factor is the transaxle!!! Whatever year transaxle you are going to use is the style flywheel and clutch you will HAVE to use!!! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 08-10-2000).] |

Warren,
That is the 2 styles that I have, the engine that came with the car is a 70 2.2 and had an older style 901 tranny. The engine I'm going to use came from a 70 with a matching later style 901 tranny. So I will use the flat newer one. The other one is the cup style. The price is not that different, depending on where you buy them from. Thanks for your help. Bruce |

The "old" and "new" style clutches will both get the job done so;
Which trany is better? Use that one! |
