Headlights Out After Changing Turn Signal / High Beam Stalk -- Any Ideas?
The low beam setting in the directional / high beam stalk in my '82 911SC had gone intermittent. I replaced the stalk, first pulling out the main headlight switch on the left side of the dash so I could detach the spade connectors. But after replacing it, the headlights don't work at all -- no low beams, no high beams, no flashing, nothing. The fuses are fine. I put the old stalk back in just to see if I'd gotten a bad one (the part I replaced it with was used), and same thing -- no headlights at all.
What the hell did I do? Any ideas? -Rob Siegel

One time I replaced the kitchen dishwasher and had the same problem. I was so confused I called Sears tech rep. He showed up 2 days later and said there was nothing wrong with the dishwasher and then pointed to the on off switch on the wall, which I had failed to turn back on after completing the installation. With all due respect, did you remember to reconnect the negative cable back onto the battery.

Oh, yes. Everything else electrical works, even things that run through the main headlight switch and the directional / high beam stalk. The parking lights turn on, the dashboard lights turn on and dim, and the directionals work -- just not the headlights, either high or low beam, or flash.

I changed out my 87 Carrera hi/lo turn signal switch with a new one late this summer. I pulled the steering wheel and removed the front seat. Pulled the wire harness of the new switch thru the dash/steering column with the old switch still attached to the wheel and the back of the headlight switch so that I could pull the old wires off the terminals one at a time and replace it with the new wires one at a time. Once the back of the switch was rewired, I disconnected the turn signal switch from the steering column and replaced it with the new one. I put the wheel on and replaced the seat and it works. One thing I did not do that you mention is I did not remove the headlight switch from the dash. I did, however, loosen it up so that I could angle the back of the switch down toward the floor to make it easier to see and get to. Some of these old cars have strange things go wrong. Curious how your headlight switch works except on the headlight function. I guess I'd try to find something wrong in the headlight switch itself. Not sure I'd know exactly what to test, but I guess I'd finally get around to reading the instruction manual on my multimeter.
