915 side cover- Potential Stupid Question!
I would like to excahnge the differential side cover on my early 915 with the later reinforced one, since I am running a 3.6 engine.
The question is. Can I change it without removing the transmission from the car? I am trying to get a pare 915 to rebuild approrpitely to handle the 3.6 engine, but this will take me some time. In the meantime, I will not want the trans in my car to be destroyed, so I though that at least I could reinforce the weakes point which seems to be the differential side cover. the thing is that I would not like to remove the engine twice...if possible. Thanks in advance for your inputs.. BTW: if anyone has a later version side cover ('79-'83, prt n. 915.301.311.05/06) for sale I am interested.

The sidecover can be changed without trans removal.Be sure to keep track of any shims and replace them in the new cover

If I were going to the trouble of beefing a 915 I would go for the Wevo stuff, more $ yes, but why take half steps.

Glad you found that side cover at a decent price (Hayden suggested that piece for my late mag case)...

Yeap, it's always a matter of $$ and where to draw the line. I am going to use other WEVO components, such as the bearing retaining plated, but from what I have research the later model side cover is already a big improvement to the one I have.
thanks for the inputs.

If going to the trouble of rebuiling anyway.I would start with an aluminum case from an SC or newer.Sell your mag case unit(1976?) as a working trans and the later case will also have the stronger sidecover and I think a better mid bearing retainer plate as well.

If it's from your '76, then it's Mag. I bought the last version of the Mag case and it's a 915/61 from a '77, I think...

The mg cases have an iron girdle that provides as much strength as the aluminum cases sans girdle

FWIW,..If you get the WEVO one, you need to check your pinion depth and backlash,......

Bill V Can you elaborate on the iron girdle? It seems to be common knowledge that the aluminum case 915 is a stronger box with a higher torque and power capacity.
