Of course you did. Anyone would pay the bill for their loved ones health care.

Depends.
Was it for the P motor or the V motor (MG motors never fail)

I'm a big fan of doing it right, and doing it once.

You don't want to skimp on a 911 rebuild. That would be a shame to do a $5000 rebuild, and then a $10,000 rebuild soon after to get it right.

Kelly - you did the right thing. If kept in good shape, these engines can last over 300,000 miles. In short, it may out live you.

You've done the right thing.

For 10K are you getting the motor rebuilt to stock specifications or are you suffering from "while we're in there-itis"?

I've heard of rebuilds costing up to 20K before, so what you paid is not unreasonable. If done right, they can last 200K or more.
Look at it this way: without a healthy engine, a Porsche is just a stationary garage ornament, and you want to drive it, right?

With P/C's costing around 3k, give or take, these days, you've got a head start on the 10K. Just the head work alone will run 1000 with the parts usually needed. Other machining will take a fast 2K out of your wallet and can go higher than that real quick like. Some nice parts like ARP bolts extend the parts expense quite a bit. All in all, there's not all that much labor built in. Of course, anyone doing this as a business has overhead, so I see 8-10K easily.

Now, do you spend 6K for someone else's problems, or do your own and know what you have? I know what your decision was.

Drago, I am doing the motor back to stock. rings, studs, valves main and rod bearings, airbox. I bought some good used pistons and jugs from this board which saved me a bunch, tho.

right thing

mine was done in 92? for $6,800 in tennesse, and paid for by a previous owner. I do not have the receipt at the office but from what i remember:
1. align bored.
2. valve guides
3. new rings, bearings, etc.
4. carrera oil fed chain tensioners.
5. carrera exhausts.
6. 11 blade fan.
7. new clutch and throw bearing.
8. new studs and time certs (may be case savers)
whoever did it was a pro as it runs good, sounds better, leaks very little oil and uses even less.

since i got it i added a front fender oil cooler and lines, painted it, new interior, and put on about 12k miles...
we enjoy it and hope to
now i hope i did not jinx it.

10k is not a bad price and you will get a lot of smiles from it.....especially going to red line.

How much would Henry Schmidt charge here at http://supertecperformance.com/ for a high strung 2.8?

Honestly? All of us are pretty crazy.

But we only get one life, and there's no better model of car to lavish with our time and cash.

After my engine rebuild, I tore every piece of glass out of the car, disassembled body panels, and did a bare metal respray. During the paint phase, I shipped the Fuchs to Al Reed. After reassembly, I spent the better part of the year redoing the interior and finally the air conditioning. Could I ever justify this expenditure?.......absolutely not!! I'm fortunate in being married to another gearhead. We always figured that it would be difficult to find another Porsche as dialed-in as what we created without encountering issues that were not addressed by a previous owner(s). Your efforts and cash spent will be fully realized by just enjoying the car.

I have spent 10K on my 10 yr old Beloved English mastiff in the last 4 months, somehow my wife loves pets more than Porsches. Buy the engine take the ride. "you cant take it with you"
