I bought a 1977 911 3.0 Carrera with dual webers, and by looking at the VIN number, it is a 3 liter car.
At first I tought it shoul`ve been a 2.7 but it is actually a 3 liter with dual webers, which I like. It also has turbo steel flares and 18" RH wheels. Is this just a regular 911 or is it more sought after?? Thanks for your replies Alejandro |

I was unaware that thy made the 3.0 in '77. I believe only the 2.7 was available but I am not an expert. What makes you think the engine is a 3.0?

Euro 3.0 for 77 was a pre-curser to the later SC series...nice 200 hp engine too instead of 180-188 later SC's. But (stock) narrow body , no rear SC flares and a bit lighter.....some really like this kind of car. The engine uses smaller ( ? ) bearings than the SC 3.0's....

In their day they were desirable, it should have CIS not carbs. Very similar to the later '78SC
They were manufactured in MY '76 and 77, I and J series cars '76 production 1093 Coupe, 479 Targa(mine is one of the later) '77 production 1473 Coupe, 646 Targa

the 18" wheels are for sure aftermarket wheels.
Turbo steel flares eh? They only came on the 74 Carrera RS. Now that was a 3.0 but it had MFI not Webbers.... |

Um, I'm pretty sure the 3.0 Carrera had flares identical to the 78-89 cars.
They're cool as hell to boot. ![]()

oem the body loked like an SC or Carrera, there were a very few special wishes turbo bodies and a ton of aftermarket turbo bodies.

I have a friend who has a 77 Carrera - a targa that he converted to a cab. It's a 3.0, came from factory w/cis. According to my friend there were only 50 of this particular car built that year. Body same as SC (flares). Pretty light and quick (noticable difference in feel of "heft" compared to my 82 SC RoW coupe).

If he knew how rare the car was, why did he make it into a cab?
I had the same question. He had to have a cab. This is his 2nd Porsche (totaled his prior 911S). He's a pretty savvy guy - was a backup driver for a Porsche cup team for three seasons a number of years ago. The increased chassis flex doesn't concern him - just considers the car to be his "cruiser".
He had the engine built out to a pretty substantial increase in power (haven't ever seen the dyno sheets) and it's factory geared quite low compared to my SC (1st is a stump puller ratio) - he told me it's rally geared. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

It's often best not to believe everything that one hears from friends or on the inter
My friend has a company that provides dealer services. The head mech. at a local Porsche dealership that he does warranty work for researched the car for him after he'd already bought it (he hadn't been shopping for a collectible, just a clean weekend "cruiser" ).
My impression is that the mech. knew by the vin or whatever that it wasn't a garden variety Carrerra and did the research as a friend (I believe my friend had already done the targa to cab conversion prior to that happening). Thassall I know - just chiming in.

The C3 was only rare in the US of A because it was never imported by Porsche NA, low production #s RoW. Don't get me wrong I have owned mine for ever and only been tempted to sell a few times over the last 3 decades.

Why was there a drop in horsepower from 200 to 180 hp? Other than the 2.7 crank, I thought compression in the Carrera 3.0 was still 8.5:1; same as early 3.0s, while ports, CIS and exhaust were also similar to the first 3.0s.

Thanks to all who replied already.
I think the webers are afterrmarket, the turbo flares are steel (front and rear) and I am also sure that the wheels are aftermarket too but they look beautifulˇˇ I`ll post a few pictures once my importer has the legal papers ready to import it this weekend into Aguascalientes, Mexico. |
