Engine lid seal

As part of my recent parts order I purchased an engine lid seal. When I had the car inspected I was told mine was missing. My question is: How does this thing attach? There are no lips or anything to attach this thing to. I can't tell from the pictures I've seen how this thing goes. The only one I saw for a split second had the wide rubber portion laying flat against the body.

Here's a couple of pics: One of the cross section of the seal, one of the area I assume it attaches to. No wise cracks about how filthy the car is - I'm working on it . Also, I was reading another post and realized what that horn looking thing is - an alarm system. Hmmm, I have no idea how it works and would really like to remove it since I have had two instances of bad luck with aftermarket alarms - this thing is aftermarket right?

Thanks.

It looks like your missing the metal lip that runs along the bottom edge. Maybe you could just use some 3m or some really strong adhesive to attach it. Also when you remove your alarm it is probably hooked into your headlights like mine was, If you take out the control module and your lights dont work then you will have to plug them back in the connection is behind your Oil Gauges on the left side of the dash, you can also access the plug from the luggage comp. but its easier to go through the dash if you have small hands. Good luck.

This seal is so hard for me to get on. In fact, I can't do it. I may need to just use adhesive.

You can do it....try some dish soap in the grooves and you can slide it on sort of. quattrorunner, I know you can do it, The reason wilson cant is because it looks like the PO grond of the lip that secures it in place.

snbush67,

Can you take a little bit better picture showing the lip that the seal attaches to? I can almost make out the shape of the metal lip - if I can see how it's shaped maybe I can rebuild it with some metal and a MIG.

It almost looks like on mine that the area with the clip was filled in... why on earth would anyone remove such an inane piece of body work? Maybe instead of rewelding a clip I can do as you suggest and stick it on there - I will likely have to remove some of the rubber to make more surface area for the glue to work on.

Thanks.

Let's try it this way... on the attached picture, is the clip that is missing from my car resemble what I have drawn in?

Thanks.

snbush67,
Thanks for the vote of confidence. I can do it! Tomorrow I'll go back out and spend another hour trying to get that ****** thing on. The dish soap should help, I'll try that.

Sorry, I just took my car in for paint and that was the last picture I took. I think those grooves (lips) are actually two different pieces but a solid piece like you drew above could work. Sorry I cant help more.

PS..... KHwilson, its not a clip or clips it is two grooves that run the entire leangth (left to right). The grooves shaped like a U almost like if you were to cut a piece of small pipe in half leangthwise. I believe that the top grove and the bottom grooves face up.

Thanks - I'll see what I can do. I know this really isin't that big of a deal but it bothers me because I can't figure out why someone would so that. If there was a wreck involved - maybe, but I can't see any other signs of wreckage and have had a body shop friend look into it also. So, I am not really worried about it - but I am placing this on the winter-time project list.

Take care.

snbush67,

I get an error when I click on the link. Something about a lookup key not found.

Strange, it opens for me. Anyway look at PRE-H20 last post it shows pictures of the rear of his engine compartment without the seal installed, it will give you a better idea of what the grooves look like. I had actually thought it was a single strip of metal but it appears to be several equally spaced attachment points.

the title of his post is "I put it into my mistress" (referring to his engine). He just posted it today so you should see it.

I cant understand why someone would have removed yours. wierd....maybe it helps the engine cool?

Got it to come up. When at first you don't succeed, reboot. I see the clips and you can also notice that where they are there is a definite indention in the body work that allows for the placement of the seal. Not only are my clips not there, but the indention has been completely filled in by something (presumably body filler). When I get a little more bothered by the whole thing I will remove some paint and see if it's body filler. If so, maybe I can remove it, get the indention back, and tack weld some clips.

Thanks for the help. I will write PRE-H2O and see if he'll send me a close-up shot of the clips.

The picture does help... to make me realize how much work I have to do on my car in comparison to yours. Man that looks good!

Unfortunately, as far as what I need for re-creating the clips, I will need extreme close-ups please as I am trying to see how they are shaped and get dimensions so that I can re-create them. It really would help to have a tape measure in each of the close-ups. I have an idea of what these are supposed be like but I need a little more info which the pics will give.

Thanks again... no hurry.

Tschuess,
