Question Calling Longhood experts - Early 911 Values - What do you guys think?

I have been following early 911's since the late 90's. Over the last 2-3 years I have noticed the prices really going up. Now, I know it is a subjective thing. One buyer will pay more for a car of his preference vrs. what someone else will pay.

But tonight I was over on http://www.europeancollectibles.com/currentinventory.aspx
and noticed some very high prices. T and E cars going for what S cars used to, etc.

What do you guys make of this? Are you seeing these types of prices being paid by buyers?

Thanks-

FWIW, IMHO, The peak has been reached, a softening will occur. Collectable cars usually follow the housing market...

I've observed the same thing over here in Oz - Good T's are pulling what average S's were only 3 years ago. However our market is limited and there is a premium on what little (relatively speaking) RHD Aussie delivered cars are available.

For example there is a really nice original 69T in blood orange for sale in a shop in Sydney at $60,000. That's about $47,000 USD

+1

I've done alot of refinances for guys in the past 4 years who turn around and by toys. Usually Harleys and muscle cars. I sold a 911 this past summer to a guy who paid for it with his refi money. Once the shine is off the housing market here, prices for toys will drop.

I don't know if values will continue to rise at this rate, or even drop. But the early 911 market now appears to have more in common with the 356 market than the 1974-1989 911 market.

In my opinion, this is a shame, since long hood models were such a good basis for hot rods and race cars for so long. But there's no getting around supply and demand.

Another thing to consider...the bond market is now at inverted yield curve stage. This often foretells a general economic slowdown, possibly a recession. Guess it doesn't matter much to me, the price of longnoses. My car & I have seen it's price rise and fall more than once in the 32 years we've been together...

At least there is "backdating"... How many cars are there in the world where we like the idea of making them look older!

I think the 912 prices are spot on.

Soooo few longhoods made vs. later editions. It's almost odd that prices weren't nutso a long time ago.

I think it may have something to do with the fact that 911's just didn't change appreciably for such a long time. To the market in general there is little difference between a '69 911 and a car 20 years newer. This is waaaay not the case with F cars, muscle cars, etc.

And now with so many options for bumper replacement (i'm not sure i'd backdate a later car to longhood looks but there are some neat alternatives) it's not a huge proposition to get a semi-unique and sharp looking impact bumper car without feeling the need to read every single thread that contains the words 'rotisserie', 'front pan' and such.

Really nice pre-67 VW bugs and Ghia's are going for $10,000 and up so Porsches should go for quite a bit more

You just don't see many long hood on the road anymore. When I see one it's a WOW, look at that moment. Much the same reaction to any rare, cool car.

I agree.
A friend of mine just picked up a perfect 66 912 for a song.
Zero rust and perfect interior & motor for a fraction of the cost for a 911 of the same year.

Have you guys noticed that Wayne has set up a new forum for Porsche Marketplace discussions?

This thread would be perfect there.

thanks for the replies. I figured I was not the only one watching this and wondering. this makes it hard to value an rgruppe car. I agree with Jack, this market is becoming much more like the 356 market.

Yes, prices are here to stay. Similar to the housing market, you don't really see too much if any price drop usually (not in asking prices, in final sale prices, asking prices do drop considerably) but you will see leveling. Of couse if you ask me this is only the beginning of the price hike for these early 911/912's as the baby boomers start retiring and wanting their childhood cars. Then, loaded with huge pensions and 401k, roth iras and so forth, they will foolishly drive up our market. Its already a main reason barret jackson cars sell so high and I am confident european classics will be the next to make news on that program.

I think the prices are ridiculously high.
JMHO....
But then again, I saw a Camaro COPO on eBay yesterday and they only wanted $250k for it.
Sometimes the pricing of cars defies common sense.
I suppose if somebody wants something bad enough, they'll pay almost anything for it.

So my bottomline is that you pay what you really think it's worth....not what someone is asking.
You may not always come away with the goods...

it'll be more satisfying to wreck mine on the track than to actually sell it. t or s, it doesn't matter... not worth getting rid of them. still considering another but can't make up my mind between a '72 and a short wheel base model...
