Respray?

My 1988 930 turbo cab's paint is looking a little tired. I know white is not as glamorous as other colors but I think it could look better.

Body wise It;s in good shape. Just a small repair on the right rear fender.

The question is: If I have it resprayed, Will this harm the value of the car or not compared to properly fixing the previous job on quarter panel and just buffing it?

The body shop guy suggested a respray.

Unless the car is very collectible, I think a car with fresh paint trumps a car with old beat up original paint.

A good high quality paint job will raise the value. Today's paint is so much better than 20 year old paint, even though factory paint will have a slightly less tendency to chip. I think it's a good idea to stick with the original color, or something close to it though.

Long term (over 20-30 years, or more) original paint will be worth more. Before I had the car painted, I'd suggest having a good body shop see what they could do with it, using polishes.

I have a guy in my town that has saved some pretty beat paint for me. You can always paint it later, if you don't succeed but paint is only original once.

When I had my 911SC I got stuck in a blowing rain storm that blew into Southern California. When I got out of the car, all of the front surfaces were sandblasted from the original Guards Red to White. I didn't think it looked particularly glamourous, so I took it to a well known body shop here. They removed the old paint and primer, reprimered the body, and then repainted it with DuPont paint (one of the best) and when I got the car back it looked better than new. The factory Porsche paint done in 1978 had slight imperfections, but the repaint done in 2000 was perfect. I realize this is a case by case comparison, but when the factory paint is not perfect to begin with, it's easier to be honest about the original paint value.

For about a year, I struggled with the same issues. I polished and worked at it, getting the paint on my 82 as good as it could possibly be. As nice as it looked, I never really got it to the standard that I was looking for. I had a glass-out, doors off, etc, etc. respray of the original color. It was a copper brown color called Rosewood Metallic....not exactly a color that jumped out at you. The body/paint guy that I know told me that there have been so many advances in the last 20 years regarding the vibrancy of paints and that I would be extremely pleased. He went ahead and did the car.....I couldn't believe the difference. Even though it was the same color paint code wise, the way the color jumped out was dramatic. Kinda depends on how picky one is and how deep your pockets are.

Also remember that your prep is your paint job. You can use the best paint and painter but unless you remove the old paint check of any rust remove the glass and what ever trim you are painting on top of what ever is already there. Do it right and you will be much more satisfied

Now that's depressing. But it only reinforces the idea that I am not selling my '87 Carrera, under any circumstances, so I don't have to worry about resale value, just how it looks and drives.

I actually think the technology has advanced beyond needing "paint codes". You can make your own color, using the "paint code" as a starting point, and not worry about duplicating the color later. Mere paint duplication is done with a color eye, and the ability to match reflectivity and color is more accurate than the human eye can detect.

I was faced with this dilemma a couple of years ago. My car is a guards red -84 targa which had been partially resprayed in the past. The front hood and cowl looked orange while the rest of the car was a mix of worn out red with scratches and clear coat bubbles.
I decided to get the car stripped and repainted largely because one of my good friends is a auto painter. It still wasn't cheap but with a turbo cab I wouldn't even have thought twice.

That was almost 2 years ago - we had twins. Now every other word from him is Auto. Both can almost pronounce Porsche -ha.

So is there something in between a Maaco job and a $10K job? I'm in the same boat. The PO did a Maaco job - lots of orange peeling, overspray everywhere, and I'm not that fond of the colour (was originally tangerine, I think he tried to go guards red and ended up somewhere in between). I want the car to look good, but no way am I putting $10K into a paint job, when I think of what that $10K could buy otherwise (engine rebuild, redo the interior, or even a 3.6 transplant!).

I don't care about originality (that boat sailed for this car a long time ago) and I'm not anal about perfection, but I do want it to look good.

$10k - holy $hit. I got a real bargain at 1/3 of that with total strip, glass and trim off, and reassembly.
