Rear Blower (engine compartment) install question....
I replaced my left / right floor board blowers because they were squeeking and this morning I smelled what was distinctly an electrical melt down when I turned on the blower fans (via red knobs between seats). I was in a panic as I was driving on the freeway at the time and thought it was engine related. I pulled over when I had a chance and noticed that the engine compartment blower that comes on when you pull up on the red knobs was making a funny sound and that was the only time you smelled anything. So I guess it is the rear blower. So my question is - how hard is it to remove and install and is there anything unusual about the repair as I am a relative newbie when it comes to engine work. I have an 89 911 cab. TIA

AJ - if you were up to replacing the kick panel little fans you should have no special problems dealing with the blower mounted on the engine. After removing the air tubes/hoses, one strap holds it to its mount. And you should have a two wire connector you can unplug from the unit and it is free.
You might take the old one to an auto-electric place to see if they think they can fix what ails it. I've not had one smoke on me (a kick panel one did on my spouse), but have had several that made bad noises, and a squeak could lead to a smell. If you need some heat short term while repairs are made elsewhere, you could kludge together some kind of hose to connect the air outlet from atop the engine directly to the hose that leads to the heat exchangers. The engine fan driven air works fairly well without the help of the blower (though the system works lots better with the blower). Walt Fricke |
