Tall Driver Question

I'm looking for a older 911SC or an 84-86 Carrera and have been limiting my search to Targa's for added head room.

I am 6'3" ,220lbs with a 34" pant inseam . Is anyone else in that size range able to fit in a sunroof or non sunroof coupe without hitting your head on the roof. There are no cars in my area to check for fit.

Thanks

I'm 6-3 with 36" inseam. I have no problem with head room in my 87 sunroof coupe. I probably have a shorter body though. If you have head room issues, I'd change the seat to something like a recaro pole position. Or find a non sunroof coupe. I'd exhaust all option before a targa. Just me though since I don't like targas.

6'3" with a 34" inseam and I have plenty of room in my 88 coupe with a sunroof. I can even wear a helmet without problems. When shopping for a 911 I was very surprised at just how much headroom they have. Just make sure you have the seat all the way down if they are power seats.

You are the same size as I am - 6'3" with 34" inseam. I do not fit inside a sunroof coupe.

I was unable to find a clean non sunroof car in my area and had to go with the Targa. Plus, wearing a helmet at auto-x and DE events made a Targa the only option. I have zero regrets having purchased the Targa. In fact, you basically get 2 cars in one - closed roof and open roof.

As a serious track car - it ain't. As one Pelicanite states - a Targa is not flexible, it conforms to the road. As a fun car - it is a blast.

I have put in stiff torsion bars, poly bushings, Targa body bars and R compound tires. Huge improvement over the 22 year old suspension and road holding feel. The car has a firm ride and corners like hell. I enjoy every second I can drive the car.

Would I purchase another Targa - YES.

You'll "fit" in the car, but whether you'll be comfortable once there is another matter. I don't like the driving position in pretty much any 911 without lowering the seat and extending the wheel closer. I'm the same size with a 36 inseam.

Where are you that you can't sit in a few and decide?

6' 4" with a 34 inch inseam, so I have a pretty long torso too. I fit well in my cab, and in both sunroof and not sun-roof, cars. I do lean the seat back though, so that may be why.

Now I can't even come close to driving a Boxster.

6'3" with a sunroof coupe, I fit fine in my Nurburgring seats from GTS. Since I take the car to the track, where helmets are required, I lowered the seats even further by custom mounting them on lowering brackets. Even with a helmet, I have room to spare. Don't buy a targa unless you are absolutely in love with them since they come with their own unique quirks - like leaks, if not properly sealed, and wind noise.

6'3" with a 32 inch inseam. Most of mt height is iin my torso and I fit nicley in my 82SC sunroof. I did however replace the wheel and used the spacers to move it back about 2inches. Now I can duck the roof and still reach the wheel.

I'm '6-5" with 34/36 inseam. I wouldn't say I have a long torso like my Dad, but it's not short either. I mention my Dad because there is NO WAY at '6-4" he would fit in my sunroof coupe, but I do. My point is, you need try them on for size-no other way.

Btw- I barely fit my sr coupe. DEs (helmet mandatory) are hell as I have to recline waay back making proper steering technique impossible. I plan on getting a Pole Position to help that.

On Targas-If you like the styling-get one. My DE instructor has one. It's fast, handles well, and most importantly-I fit no problem at all. Another friend has one and on a warm summer's evening, with the top off, there's nothing like it. I like my coupe's lines, but I gotta say, the targas have more to offer-other than leaks.

I'm 6'3" 210 pounds 35-36 inseam in a 72 911 with Pole Position seats. I modified the mounting bracket to allow the seat 1" more travel to the rear. In street shoes the seat is all the way back, driving shoes or bare foot I move forward. Very Very Comfortable.

I am 6'4" and I bought a Targa so I would have more head room.

I would have also considered a sunroof delete car

I am 6'2" with a 35 inch inseam. I do not fit in either Coupes or Cabs with factory seats; my head touches the roof in both. In a Targa, however, I have about 3 inches of headroom. I also recommend a Targa because IMO it is the most fun of the three models.

I am able to drive quite comfortably with the seat all the way back; I have the power seat so it is more adjustable than the regular seat. As I have the seat all the way back, a steering wheel spacer is a necessity.

Have fun!!

6' 9" (yes 6' 9") with 38" inseam. I fit fine with a helmet in a non-sunroof '88. Fit fine (no helmet) in an '87 sunroof coupe. I've done a lot of measuring and research on Carrera seats and head/leg room. These are my findings:

- The 1986-1989 Carrera features a lower seat mounting track than any 911 before or since. It is 22mm lower.

- The 1987-1989 Carrera gearshift (G50) provides more clearance between the shift knob and the steering wheel than any earlier car.

- The headroom difference between a sunroof coupe and a non-sunroof coupe is about 3 inches. It is a huge difference.

- A targa has about 2" more headroom than a sunroof coupe.

- US-specification SC and Carrera coupes without a sunroof are very rare, but they are out there! If you have the money, an '88 or '89 Club Sport is definitely the way to go.

The '85 model is an exception to this rule. '85's came with HIGHER seat mounts for some unexplained reason. You definitely would not fit. I'm 6'2 34" inseam and I had to have my mounts cut out and lowered on my sunroof coupe.
