yes I have a 1972 911 that I replaced this seal. I am thinking I bought the correct seal but the darn top wont sit right at the ends. Iwish I had the old one so that I can put it back on. I bought the seal from Vertex (no complains). I have centered it aligned it and the damn thing still doesnt create a sealed edge. I might be missing something but let me know

Do you mean where the seal on the windshield meets the seal on the sides of the top?

As you are sitting in the car, the top front corners dont seem to sit in the groove right. Because of this, when I install the top, these ends keep the top from making contact towards the center causing bad wind noise leaks (although it hasnt rained in Texas yet) and the latches are very difficult to latch. I sure thought it would be a pull off, clean put on type of job but NOT. help louis

Boy, I'm not sure what to tell you. Mine is an 82sc and the seal went in pretty easily. I don't remember at this point if there is a different seal for the older cars. Did you use adhesive to hold the seal into the groove?

I just went and checked the seal on my '72. The seal wraps all the way around the windshield and down the front door post. I had wind problems with my old seal and found that there are clips that hold the top onto the frame. Those clips had loosened and would allow a great deal of wind noise in. After tightening those down the noise went away. You can buy larger clips that will hold the top tighter onto the frame to reduce the wind noise also.

I just replaced my top seals from Vertex this weekend. I bought the front and rear. I removed the old ones and glued then ew ones in the channel.
Guess What? my top fits nice and tight but wil not seal on my windows. there is a 1/4" gap from the side seals to the window. The new seals seem to be taller and do not allow the targa top to sit down far enough. Although there is no wind noise the top sticks up above the windshield and looks pretty rediculous. I wonder if I have the right top. Any suggestions? Jamie 71 911T targa http://www4.ncsu.edu/~jpnovak |

I have replaced all seals on my 83 Targa. The front seal has to be fitted. It still has the same part no. but it is a different size. Contact Dan at CARSInc1@aol.com and he will send you information on how to fit the seal correctly

I noticed when I did mine that the top didn't seem as tight as before. It even leaked a little at the top of the wing windows. However, leaving the top on almost the whole time during winter the seals appear to have "mated" better. The top is now tighter than it was before and doesn't leak at all. I guess the seals need time to get used to each other and form to each other.

hi
jpnovak and I have the same problem apperantly. The guys at vertex are great and helpfull but it might be that something is not right. It seems that the part of the rubber that meets at the corner frame is too bulky. I too have that 1/4-1/2" gap between the door top glass and the side top rubber. could it be vertex's rubber parts? all others fit very well!!! |

Just a thaught. Maybe the seal on the top itself is thicker when new also. I too have a slight gap above the vent window. I plan to replace all my seals little my little as I rebuild the car, but maybe will now rethink which ones to replace at the same time.

Now that my new seals have been in place for about 2 weeks, they are starting to compress. I noticed that the gap above the windows is gone and there is still a small gap above the vent window. I will keep and eye on it and let you know if it goes away. I think that t alittle trimming may be in order. especially above the vent window.
