Going To Paint My 69 Need Some Advice On Body Mods (Pic)
Ok I am going to have my 69 painted within the next week and I am realyl confused because I bought the car the exact way you see it pictured in the picture:
![]() I can tell that it doesn't have the factory rear fenders on it because they are really flared out. The problem is I don't know what type of fenders they are. I've been told by a few folks that they are the Carerra RS style fenders. Anyone know for sure? I want to get rid of my front bumper when i get the car painted and I was wanting to add an "S" front spoiler but I don't want to put an S front spoiler on the car if S's never came with those style fenders. Even though the car is not a real S (nor is it even a 911) I don't want the imitation job to look totally fake and get laughed at. I like the way the rear fenders are but I want the rest of the car's body to match. So did "S" cars come with those style fenders? Also did the "S" cars come with rear spoilers? Thanks! Dustin |

Your car looks suspiciously like a corporate image-hosting credit, but maybe that's just my browser.
In 1969, (B-series) the cars had recently been given a longer wheelbase, but still had very little in the way of flare to their wheel arches. It's one of the components of the early 911 design that really 'dates' it. Back then, wheels were skinny. (The first S models had 4.5-inch wheels!) The 2.0 liter cars slowly got slightly more lip on their arches -- 1969 was the first year they were wide enough for 6-inch wheels -- but even with that, they looked pretty much like this: ![]() As far as I know, exterior modifications ('S' or otherwise) didn't allow for wider wheels until the 1973 Carrera RS, where rear flares allowed 7-inch wheels (for the touring models -- even wider for the lightweight models). They looked like this: ![]() If your 69 has had flares added, they're probably SC arches, not RS arches -- since they're difficult to tell apart, and the SC ones are much cheaper. My 911 with an RS look has SC flares. See if you can tell the difference between the expensive ones, up above, and the cheaper ones, down below: ![]() Answer: the squared-off portion of the lip is a little less "chunky" on the SC flares. The chin (or S-type) spoiler didn't appear before 1972, I think. So, technically speaking, if you're going for a stock look, you should have no rear flaring, and no chin spoiler. Of course, there aren't any body styling differences other than those that distinguish a 69 from a 73 (except door handles and other little things). I don't think anyone would laugh at you for going for an RS look (with or without the ducktail). But that's ne. I personally think the flares make the car look both classic, and more 'finished.' But my little monster isn't going to win any concours events. Since I've already overloaded this post with huge images, here's what the 911 looks like with the S-trim, flared rear wheel wells, and normal decklid. ![]() For a good history of the 911 online, go to the place where I swiped some of these images from -- Kevin Franke's site: http://www.idee.demon.nl/inh-story.htm Disclaimer, etc: I'm probably wrong about some of this, and I apologze about the images to those of you with modems and busy schedules. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T sunroof coupe |

Jack: your 911 is stunning! I love it!
I think I will just get a 911S front spoiler and leave the rear stock. Where did you get your 911S Spoiler at? I need to find a place who has a really good quality one in stock. |

Thanks. I got my rear bumper and used flares from Rennspeed Motorsport. I'm sure they could get you a front spoiler. Maybe even a steel one. Here's a link.
