now that winter has arrived here in northern calif. my 82-911 has its typical hard to stay running problem to which I do nothing. Then after the re-start and back -fires, she then purrrs like a cat. I would like to know, is this the warm up reg, or the various thermo switches assoc. with this control system?

U could try removing the vacuum to the WUR and plug the line to the throttle body. that will allow max richness which is what the thermo valve (if u have one) does. if u have a thermo time switch, it activates the cold start "injector". i dont know much about that year, so im not sure what all your cis has on it.

Sounds like you need to ck the cold pressures on the WUR. You should also check the mixture and timing after the car is warmed up. I wouldn't start removing vacuum lines and such.

Good stuff.
If you don't have the Bentley SC Repair Manual, get one; it explains a lot about your CIS.
I don't think an '82 has a TTV, the line from the WUR goes straight to the TB.
Without a fuel pressure tester, it's impossible to check the system pressure or control pressure (WUR)
I would test the Auxillary Air Regulator (AAR), check the wiring from the starter solenoid to the Thermo Time Switch (TTS) over to the Cold Start Valve (CSV)
It doesn't hurt to check for vacuum leaks and tweek the mixture.
Read the Bentley, you'll love it!

why don't you first, disconnect the oxy sensor, and leave it that way, set the timing to 33-35° total advance, and set the CO to 3.5%. then see if it gets any better.

I quote leverpuller here because this is exactly what my '82 has started to do here in N. Calif. When I got the car the lambda box under the passenger seat was unplugged and the cold start valve was unplugged and it started just fine. And it had just passed Calif. smog like that.

Of course I needed to plug it all back in and it ran fine until it started getting cold.

JW, to set the timing on the '82 are the vacuum lines (2) removed and plugged and do you set the timing at 6000 RPM?

I know this has been covered here a million times but I am still trying to fully understand the CIS.

Since some stuff was disconnected and reconnected, are you sure that the frequency valve is working?
With engine running, carefully reach in there and feel the FV.
Is it buzzing/vibrating?
Check/clean the relay connections to the brain under the pass. seat.
The relay gets power from the same fuse as the interior light.
The FV has to function for a smooth run.
I think JW means to leave everything connected stock, except just pull off the OX connection in the engine compartment.
Then set the timing and mixture per his recommendation; he likes to set the mix much richer than factory and run more advanced timing.
Of course, it is assumed that your distributor and all CIS- and CDI-components work and you have no vacuum leaks.
