Another Gutted Muffler Question

Do you guys remove all three of the divider walls when you gut the muflers or just the center divider and connecting pipes?

Why are you gutting the muffler?

I have a completely gutted factory 2-in-1-out that I used for the track a while back. Got it used but was told everything was taken out. Basically it was a shell with an exhaust port.

I since have a Bursch (but considering another). I found that the gutted muffler was lighter but loader than the Bursch.

I stopped using it since it was too load.

I've always wondered if the exhaust flow was not as efficient since the bafflings were removed.

I just cut 3 inch holes in each of the dividers, still 2 in, 1 out.
not too loud, not too quiet.

muffler

Just my 2 cents here, but I just did the gutting the stock Carrera muffler thing 2 days ago and used Gordo2's posts to guide my first attempt at it. Since I had an idea of the internal working parts prior to cutting open by looking at Gordo2's posts, I decided to only cut open the chamber where all the insulation is and simply removed all that stuff but left all the pipes intact. Then I cup open the far right passenger baffle open and removed both pipes. I honestly thought that the finished project would sound alot louder, it does not. I'm actually a little dissapointed that it is not louder, but it does have a much nicer rumble at idle and sounds great at anything above 4000rpm. If you're not sure, do what most people have done myself included, and buy a used muffler to try this and if you don't like it, put the stock back on. Just be careful when you pay someone to weld the thing back up for you, I got robbed paying $200 for stainless tig weld, a supposed buddy, ahhh. Oh well, live and learn....I guess I haven't lived long enough! Anyway, just do it, you'll like it as it won't be too loud. Acutally won't be loud enough :-(

sound clip

I'll take a mpeg4 movie clip tomorrow and if I can figure out how to post it, I'll do so, if not then I can email it for you to hear. I forgot to mention that my conversion was made to retain the single in/out aspect of the muffler, and I am using a cat bypass pipe.

Thanks Magnus. Do you have pix of the "gutting" in progress?

I'd like to retain the one in\one out two. Not interested in the dual out option.

You could try posting the vid on youtube, photobucket, etc.

Magnus,

Sorry to hear about the expense to weld... Mine was in fact a cheap fun project in the end, costing about $100 total (including the second muffler in case things didn't turn out as imagined).

When thinking through how I wanted to modify the piping I was primarily concerned that it wouldn't come out loud enough - I think I hit the mark with mine. I set off my first car alarm yesterday...

As far as I am concerned with respect to mod'ing mufflers: If you keep it a fun, cheap project you won't be dissapointed... Stray too far into the funds and the fun meter drops tainting whatever sound you come up with.

Gordo

side exit pipe

anyone need a side exit pipe to mod their muffler? This is 2.5" (64mm) galvinized steel, $20 shipped.

A steep restocking fee on this special order pipe is the reason I still have it.

The Dansk came out like this.
