The $100K 911
A recent thread got me thinking.
Jagermeister RSR for sale I believe the early 911s are over valued but the price keeps climbing for untouched or restored nice cars as well as the ones that need some help. $25/30K will buy you some nice cars off Pelican. The majority of them unfinished project cars with various upgrades. Several shops that are represented here on Pelican make a habit of producing $100K cars that are stunning and generally featured in EXCELLENCE. Then there are number of guys here on Pelcian that have built some amazing cars. Some of those have sold for pennies on the dollar. Nothing in any kind of order but here are some the cars I am thinking about. Please feel free to comment on costs, price and resale values. Here are some examples. Asking $31K (77 Widebody 911s w/3.6 in the classifieds) sold to TRE ![]() SC with a 3.6 vario ram and totally sorted.. sold for 32K ![]() Jack once told me what he had into BBII. What do you think it would cost to replace today? Couple more really nice "EXCELLENCE" cars. What do you think they cost to produce? ![]() Word was both of these cars were over 100K delivered. What about these? ![]() ![]()

My car is very humble compared to the car's above and I'm certain it couldn't be reproduced for less than 2x what I could sell it for

The adage used about racing applies here. How do you get a small fortune? You start with a large one and build one of those.

Well, I know that I have a receipted $70,000--probably $80,000 by this time, a coupole of years after I wrote my gold-plated Porsche book--in my modified '83SC, and I'd be very lucky to sell it for $20K. I'd rather give it to a friend for $1 if it came to that.

I don't have $100K, and my girls are going to college in a couple years so there goes $100K.
But, if I did have $100K, I don't think that is where my money ends up. They sure look nice though.

Steve...project or finished? If you are $80K into a car that will only bring $20K seems liek it would have to be a 20/20 car.
Here is another $100K car and definately not a 20/20. Quote:
"I guess I agree with the above estimate on 25-30k. Put it this way, if I was to sell mine with the 935 susp, the 6-speed tranny and the 3.9 engine I doubt I'd get more than 40-42k (on a sunny day). If you think that the transmission alone was 8k and the 935 stuff 6k... (let's not even get into the motor or the $$$ spent to fit the tranny into the tub)"

I think there are 2 types of buyers and thus 2 different markets for these cars.
Type one. The Porsche enthusiast buyer that is stuck in the 80s and has something for these cars. He/she knows the ins and outs of these cars. These guys will shop on Pelican parts and get one of those great deals that come up from time to time at a fraction of the cost (the top 3 cars excluding BBII come to mind). The he/she will proceed to change whatever is needed to make this car their "perfect/dream" 911. Not that there is anything wrong with the original cars to start with but maybe the green RS needed a 2.8 8k revving motor istead of a 993 V-ram, the white needed bigger hips and so on). In my opinion this type of buer will never go and buy the finished package because half of the fun is in the project itself, in customizing it to the last detail. Type 2 The sport car enthusiast with a lot of disposable income. After trying the latest GT3, Lambo, SL55AMG he has a sting on a friend's early 911 and falls in love. He/she wants one of these badly and wants it now. He will never race it, possibly some DEs and it will keep it for 1-2 years before the next thing comes along. These guys are not shopping on Pelicas. These guys need the fisnished product. Don't have the time, patience, knowledge for embarking on a 1yr long project. So for these guys the $100k 911 is something special, with more kudos that a GT3, and ego booster and a challenge at the same time. Can u make one of the top 3-4 cars into a $100k car? I think so... These shops do it all the time and make money. And if they sell if for $100k it means it cost much less than that do put toghether. The problem is that when you set up building your own dream car you don't care abt what the potential market will want. It's your darn dream. For example with my car I know I made some irrational choices that would diminish a potential buyer (like 935 suspension and no cage, no camber boxes in the back, rear seats etc). But I don't care. I know though that if I had to sell my car now I would have problems in getting what I put into it. |

The mkt wants RSRs or IROC or 74 RSRs replicas. So get rid of the accordian bumpers, rockers, swap the tails and voila'. Or make it into a 934... even cheaper and easier and it will be one of a kind. And it's turbo too. As it sits it's just a 930 with go-fast bits (real go fast... but still only a 930). Make it special and it'll sell for 100k. But it means that you need to invest more $$$ on it... Usually when someone sells one of these is because for one reason or another they are done with the car and the idea of spending more $$ on it is not very realistic |

It's all about supply and demand. Seems to me that the limited money for collectible cars is buying the big old American iron these days. The problem is that the market for early 911s (89 and earlier) has always been relatively small. 911s have never enjoyed the mass popularity and appeal of the Hemi 'cudas and other similar American cars. In terms of the value of 'hot rod' 911s, the market will always remain small -- and it will appreciate over time, but even if you look at the America collectible car market it's the low mile original cars that always bring the best money. The 'resto-rods' never seem to be a money making proposition. I think this will always be true. The only people who seem to make money on these 'resto-rods' are the shops that custom build them for their customers.

Why are we talking about selling? These are not cars, they are passion. Steve said he would rather give his to a friend than sell it for chump change. I think this is passion in the car talking. I do understand we are talking about objects with monitary value, it would be important to me to get it's value as well, but I don't want to talk about it till I absolutly have to, you know?
Tio, are you bored? Hows yours coming? I can't wait till you can appreciate it again. It will be fun to pick the kids up from school in it again I'm sure

I hesitate to add up my project, but I am sure I am north of 60K. Best of everything went into the car but that does not make it more desirable or "better" than any other car. I thought I could get 40K for it, maybe, when it is done. I doubt I will sell though as I want to get some driving pleasure out of my $$$$ and time. It is a passion and a quest for something individual and unique and that reflects "me". Hobbiest don't build cars for profit unless they like being broke.
Cheers

The body shop is contractred by the local Porsche, BMW and Mercedes Benz dealers so my car is not really a priority... Taking the girls to school will be a blast... They (2 and 3yr old) are already talking about papi's blue Porsche that is even faster than the black one

They have it good. If they are like mine, they'll choose the black one once they get a rind in the loud one. Sounds fun.
