What can I get for $15K

Looking to get into my first 911, and looking to spend around $15K. Either want a long nose with an uprated engine, or a post 84 Carrera Targa. Not so interested in SCs unless they are in the $10K range. The more mods the better. Dont care if its original, just want it to look nice and go fast.

Any chance of getting a 72-73 with a 2.7 or bigger engine in it (without rust)?

Sorry for the newbieness.

Check with Elombard, he's readying his 73 for sale. We dropped the engine last week to replace the tranny. It's all cleaned up, all leaks fixed, valves adj, tin freshly powder coated, lots of mods . Nice car.

$15k or even a little less would get you this one, located in North Alabama South of the "salt belt" and North of the salt water.

1972 911T
Good body, but small rust hole in the bottom of 1 rear seat and some surface stuff on floorboard. Better than most early cars I have seen. RS flares.
Upgraded to a 2.7 liter (7R case) with rejetted Webers, Carrera tensioners. Ansa exhaust
Heads recently redone, drives nice

Tranny is in process (5th gear bearings seized on the pinion shaft) I am trying to locate a decent used tranny, but may attempt to rebuild this one.

Price would reflect completeness or lack thereof.

You are in Carrera territory with 15K. I would look for an 87 or later due to the fact that the G50 is a heavier duty transmission. Also, unless you are in love with the Targa look, consider a coupe. The tops tend to leak and are a bit of a pain to maintain, and God bless you if you ever have to change the rear gla$$. Also, I bet I roll my moon roof back far more frequently than a Targa owner pulls off his top.

Please don't kill me Targa owners.

Some like the older cars because they are lighter, but they also have less power, so it is a trade off. You can lighten a Carrera as long as you don't mind deviating from stock.

I appreciate the cleaner look of the older cars even though I own a Carrera, but I am glad my car is galvanized. The older ones are not and unless well cared for can become pretty rusty buckets.

Take your time, don't fall in love with a particular car, and above all, get a pre-purchase inspection so you know what is in store.

Best of luck

FWIW, I got $19.8k for my SC coupe in July. You ain't gonna get a decent Carrera for $15k. No matter what you pay for it, you will have at least $20k into it within 2-3 years. Pay now or pay later. But you will pay.

Maybe it is the market. I got my Carrera here in New Hampshire for 13K, 4years ago. Aside from tires, general maitainence, and some tie rods, I have not had to put much into the car that wasn't a frill, like the new stereo I bought for it. I have 120K on the odometer and the car runs well. There are paint chips, but that is to be expected in a car this old. I don't know, maybe I just got a lucky or the 911's are starting to apreciate.

Almost 20K for an SC seems like a lot to me. Yours must have been a pristine example.

I had a mint 85 Carrera for sale trying to get what its worth. I ended up trading it in for 13K plus the 1k bennifet from the tax on the new car. it had 88 k miles and completly restored, new paint, glass, trans, seals, top, wheels, tires, dash, etc. Yes you can get a cherry Carrera for 15K

"$14,100"

Um, you are going to have to explaing this one to me.....

I know 996 values are dropping, but there has to be a story behind this one.

WPOZZZ 12-08-2006 01:16 AM

85k tiptronic that is supposed to be slipping in 5th. The owner was told that it needed a new tranny and just said it was time for a new car. I drove the car on the freeway and the tranny was not slipping. All seemed fine at 65 mph in 5th. The last straw was the flat tire a couple days ago.

The car was just neglected and really filthy. I picked it up this afternoon and put a couple new tires on the back and have spent the night cleaning it. There's lots of nicks that I buffed out really quickly, but The rear bumper has impact marks that will require a repaint in the future. Then there's the big key mark on the front fender.

I've got an '87 Carrera Targa for sale for $11.5K. Cheap I know, but it has 218K on the odometer and will probably need another head job within 2-3 years. Other than the mileage the car is in great condition. Located in the Seattle area.

wcc 12-08-2006 05:48 AM

Don't be afraid of the higher mileage ones either cause some of those are great deals and well taken care of. For example, I bought my '85 with about 175k miles one owner and a fresh top end, but the trans was going to need work. It was in better shape then some of the 2-3 owner ~80k mile cars I was looking at. I got it way less then 15k and drove it till the trans was done. I got a few years out of it the way it was and just had the trans rebuilt at 210k miles and I still have way less then 15k into it.

Another thing I like about having a high mileage car is the fact it has high miles on it. I mean I can jump in it anytime and go for a drive and not worry about putting miles on it. It already has lots of miles, so I drive it an enjoy it. My 930 is the garage queen. I try to keep the miles down on that so it isn't driven half as much. But I think next summer that is going to change. Life is too short.

Sorry, but I don't buy into that all P-cars are 20k rule. The majority of the time it's accessories that'll get you close to 20k quick. But, If YOU do the required maintenance/repairs it would save you a ton and it would take you a long time before you hit that 20k mark.

Good Luck on your search!

Prices in USA really are below Europe.
Here you will pay at least 16-17K Euro for a decent 3.2, going up to 25K for the low mileage cars.

Ill sell mine for $15k... I have about $17k in it. We just decided to move and will have no place to keep the car. Many upgrades....

Heres my thread:
Only 89k miles and LOTS of records since new. I did a TON of work to this car.

couldn't get a serious buyer for mine at 15K, bad carfax, must have been all the high profile collectors, or my sarcasm, but she still sits in the garage, Salvage somewhere in the past, perfect and fast now. 15K cask always talks.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165604056.jpg

but then again its not a targa or a trashed car, i think i have figured out most people believe if its to goo to be true it must not be true. Their loss. The most i get on this car is, " please send me some information about your car, our clients are very interested and we would like to come to some arrangements quickly to procure your vehicle" LOL

Dgraphic911 12-08-2006 09:58 AM

and its an 87 g50 red on black, hmmm

dsfnctn 12-08-2006 08:43 PM

Yeh,lets keep this thread rolling and bash all the people that are so stupid when they are buying a car that all they will pass on a gold mine with a bad car fax and then turn around and buy some pile of S%$T just because it has a clean carfax.

I got a deal on an 79SC updated to 84specs, 98% changed for $6k 4 years ago. Now after near $10k more spent getting it right, she is nearing what I wanted. She is reliable, fun, and looking good.
You can indeed get a lotta Porsche cheap, but follow the info. A cheap Porsche may not be a cheap Porsche depending on that car. I love mine, could not get the dollars back, but have an understanding with it now that it is a keeper!
For $15k, you should get a nice 911 if you look. But, it may well need a few $k to get it where you want it! Luck may be on your side, hopefully.
I found it was not with me. After nearing $16k I have an awesome car that looks great and drives great. Fairly quick and shines like a new one. Your $15k might get you more than you thought. Do not follow a friends lead blindly, I did.
