Thank's for the Pix. what I'm really looking for is a Flat Black Corrugated like the one's they use in Jags and other Euro Cars.

The paint you are looking for is called "wrinkle finish". You can buy it in rattle cans, and it can be mixed to spray on as well, I believe. It has a additive to create the wrinkling as it dries.

Bill is correct. You can find the wrinkle paint in most auto parts stores.

Wouldn't painting the valve covers somewhat insulate them?

Retaining heat in the valve train = not a good thing.

Wrinkle finish is also available as a powdercoat. I had my valve covers done, and they look great.

Try Wurth products, they are a little more expensive but the highest quality. Many specialized coatings.

I did the crinkle paint thing on some 964 valve covers a few years back. The few (metal) 964 valve covers that I have seen vary from a smooth "racing beige" paint to skanky peeling paint.

I'm all for beauty-is-as-beaty-does but in this case I hardly think they are any worse at radiating heat than the plastic valve covers that later motor's had.

painting them will help them radiate heat better - no matter what color you use.

but the heat loss is so small it doesn't matter really

Resurrecting this just because....

....I want to try this on some parts and don't really feel like removing botched paint.

What are some application and drying suggestions that'll produce an even wrinkled finish? Can I apply over primer/filler or just bare metal? I'd prefer to live awhile longer and thus avoid the spouse's oven. How about a gas barbecue, heat lamps, ideal temperature, etc.?

Thanks,
Sherwood

Never mind. My memory cells have faded - it's all over. I asked this question awhile back. Evidently, I haven't painted anything yet.

I've found wrinkle paint to be hard to clean -- this was in the dim past tho (which includes most of my life)...

anybody have experience on dirt?

Heat loss through the valve covers is not an issue. Wrinkle paint looks beautiful when new but is hard to clean and looks shabby when nicked or worn. I painted mine with a hammertone finish which (to my eyes at least) looks good in a tasteful way.

Phil

i have it done, cannot find a clean/clear picture of them @ the moment, but the look is great IMO, expecially when combined with other clean surfaces....and no too many bright colours.... (presently mine doesn't look great cause of the ugly yellow shroud...)..

will post a pic when i can/

If not powder coating I would use VHT wrinkle paint. It's chemical resistant after it's cured. This is accomplised by baking @ 200 degrees fro an hour. If not your kitchen oven then perhaps your outdoor gas grill. They also state that the paint will cure by operating the car for a while.

VHT is likely what you'll find in the auto supply stores.

I'll second the VHT black wrinkle paint as a very superior product!

Bake the valve covers on a high rack in a gas grill on low for a couple of hours ... and you will get a superior, tough finish. I don't think the environment in an engine compartment will be hostile enough to do much to them that would diminish their appearance.
