engine swap help

hello all,
I'm a newby Porsche owner, a 69 911t with 73 rs bodywork. Beautiful car but very lacking in the engine department, low compression numbers on two cylinders. I'm looking at a 76 2.7 liter but my question is will this engine mate up with my 901 transmission or will I need to find a newer 915 as well? I would also like to keep my freshly rebuilt webers. What changes will I need to make to them? Thanks in advance, any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Why the 2.7? I have one (1976 911S) that is freshly rebuilt, but I desire the early 3.0 It is a much more durable unit yet shares the 2.7 crank etc. I hear you can get power out of a 2.7 (and you gotta love that engine music) yet the 3.0 offers more of everything, including confidence.

The 2.7 will mate up with your 901 trans, but you will have to use your cup-type flywheel on the 2.7 crank. Your Webers will work on the 2.7 ... you may want to check out Bruce Anderson's response about your exact question in the current (Nov.) issue of Excellence. You will probably want some more aggresive cams ('Solex,' 'E,' 'S,' or GE-40, or GE-60) to get the best power from your Webers, and you will want to keep your '69 heat exchangers and muffler, too!

If you don't already have a copy of Bruce Anderson's Porsche 911 Performance Handbook, you should get one before proceeding with your project! To get the most from a 2.7 and have a reliable engine, several issues will need to be addressed ... ignore them at your own risk!!!

Ffilips,

An MFI 2.4 or 2.7, IMHO, would be a better option than either a CIS 2.7 or a CIS 3.0.

The 3.0 SC engines are more durable compared to the CIS 2.7's, although the cooler-running MFI 2.4 and 2.7's are more durable than the CIS 2.7's, while being higher-revving and more responsive engines in comparison.

Keep us all posted,

Matt H.

Can anyone (Warren?) give a summary of the differences between the cams in terms of relative power and torque, and where in the rev range it arrives.

Thanks!

my friend recently installed a 2.7 into his '70 911t with a 901 tranny. i know that he is very happy with the swap. originally he had his eye on a 3.0 but the difference in price and further modifications persuaded him to install a 2.7 instead. he bought both his engine/tranny from paul weir.if you want to know more i can arrange for you guys to chat. let me know.

Cam,

The early Solex and 'T' cams had a torque peak at 4200 rpm, the CIS engines at 4000 rpm, the 'E' engines at 4500 rpm ... and the 'S' cammed MFI 2.4 and 2.7 around 5100 to 5200 rpm. To put it succintly, when a CIS is on peak torque at 4000 rpm, an 'S-cammed' engine is just coming 'on-cam' and has 1200 rpm to go before hitting its' stride!!! And, a fun climb it is ... in any gear, above 4000, all the way to 7300 rpm!

Look in Bruce Andersons book regarding the 3.0. You already have the exhaust and correct carbs to make it scream(with a little work to the carbs). I put a '83 3.0 in my '70T, a couple of months ago. Took a while getting everything ready, but it bolted right up to my 901. You need the newer flywheel, but you will use the p/p and disc from your previous set-up. The thing that takes the longest is matching up the wires. I did it right the first time, but I was so worried about frying something, I didn't try to start it for another week while researching. Super easy. I got my motor complete 62k for $4200. I was looking for a 3.2 but the 3.0 is much easier, and a direct bolt-in job(of course much cheaper). Of course you should try and get the best, and newest motor you can afford, but research the costs of all the other crap you have to do, so you won't be surprised. A 3.6 would be aweful nice, but not cheap. Think about a 915, it can handle the power much better. You'll have to baby first and reverse on your 901 if you want to keep it for a while. Ed

Thanks for the input everyone. It sounds like the 3.0 is the way to go if I can find one thats affordable.

hey ed rodgers,
did you make any further adjustments to the car (suspension, tires, flares, brakes, etc) to accomadate the additional HP? it's very tempting to add a 3.0 but i would hate to have to chase my tail in making further mods.
