Update and Questions on Bent Valve/broken rocker
Well I started dropping my engine. Under the advice of another PCAer I am removing the exhaust system first (i don't have a engine stand). While waiting for some of the exhaust studs to soak I pulled the sump cover and driver side lower valve cover in seach of the missing valve keeper. I didn't find it. I pulled the wheel and looked down the oil return tubes and up and around the exhaust valve (i bent #3 intake) I was hoping to find the valve on the oil screen but didn't. Is there a way to remove that screen with out splitting the case is there a way the keeper went into the cylinder? The valve stayed in place and is stuck (never fell into the cylinder)
Where could that evil little chunk of metal gone? What kind of tool do you use to remove the driver side heat exchanger nuts (not the allen barrels) I know it is 13mm but what type of wrench will fit in there? Wish me luck. Maybe I will write up an article on replacing the valve. Omar 78 911sc Euro Targa currently in prep for open engine surgery |

Omar,
Don't worry ... the keeper couldn't have gotten into the cylinder! It is probably on the bottom of the sump, resting comfortably, somewhere below the outlet of the oil return tube! The factory service manual shows a 'bent' 13 mm box-end wrench being used on those hex nuts on the heat exchanger. Be sure to use plenty of heat on those nuts, preferrably a 'rosebud tip' on an oxy/acetylene torch ... heat only the nut, and from the side ... several heat/cool down cycles from cherry-red! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Well I got the exhaust off the car and just about every thing disconnected. All that remains is the shift coupler (can't get that 4mm hex to move) and a fuel line.
It connects to a t fitting right in front of the #3 intake runner and also connects to the fuel accumlator(?) It has a 17mm connector with what appears to be a 14mm jam nut. I can't move it the bracket bends and I am scared of breaking it. I plan on dropping the engine and tranny at the same time. I used a 13mm 1/4 inch flex socket to get the heat exchanger nuts off. Any one has a good source for a really cheap and I do mean cheap heat exchanger for the drivers side. It is pretty rusted out. Any tips or suggestions I plan on doing the tensioner upgrade when I have engine out (if it doesn't kill my budget) Omar |
