newby 911 question heat reactors??
I am not new to porsche as i already had 7 or 8 but new to 911
i just bought a 75 S targa,, i know the engine is good but i would like to know , how do you make the difference between the non reactor to the one who have, there is very litlle history on the car exect what you see,, 11 fan blade and hydraulic tensionner, how do i know about the heat exchanger

It is the parts catalogue and there are diagrams of the 1975 heat exchanger with thermal reactors and without reactors. The reactor is the cylindrical section. Look at the 74 style heat exchanger for non-reactors. All you need to do is look under the car.

reactor
lets say the car has reactor, is there a way to remove the inside,, do anyone has a cut off view of the inside of it, i got a welder,, so it might be easier to cut the end up and empty the bad stuff, instead of buying new exchnager?/

There is something called a "W" pipe, which replaces the reactor and connects to the exhaust ports and directs exhaust through the exchanger and out the muffler. I don't think gutting them is the answer, but that would not be my area of expertise.

I don't have a photo but looking inside my old reactors I believe the "bad-stuff" inside is a set of baffles designed to keep the internals very, very hot.
Opening and gutting them would still leave you poor exhaust flow (maybe worse) and with large "ovens" sitting underneath your engine when you shut it off - not good. The W pipe mentioned above will help, but that money could better be applied to buying a set of 1974 or earlier style stainless steel (SSI) heat exchangers. My '77 car was converted to them and even passes California smog tests. Ron

Our host sells them (see below) - very reasonable price and hard to fabricate.

I don't know where you can find a photo, but maybe searching in the classified section will turn up someone selling a used set?

W pipes. You are still better off to buy a set of old style heat exchangers. You're talking a couple hundred bucks to give you piece of mind the engine life is being extended. You own a 911 so you'll need to get used to the fact that maintenance is the best way to spend your money to keep your car reliable.
