Why build this car?? A real one is probably cheaper

Why would anyone spend this much time nad money to build this car on a 1980 frame when you could probably buy the real deal for less tiem and money than this took to build a replica.

Looks nice but I agree...Why?

I need a brake after reading all that.

SlantnoseSD 12-15-2006 01:33 PM

You read it all. I just skimmed it becasue who would really take the time to read all of that. Imagine how long that took to write.

hatpix 12-15-2006 01:43 PM

Without a doubt, the single most anal, longest winded auction posting I have seen in 8 years on eBay.

Early_S_Man 12-15-2006 01:44 PM

The lies/distortions begin in paragraph 2:

Quote:

Besides, the chassis of a 1980 Porsche 911 and a 1996 993 are about 80% the same.

Only 118 paragraphs more to stretch the truth in ...

k9handler 12-15-2006 01:52 PM

wow that is a bunch of work...both the car and the write up.

defcon65 12-15-2006 01:55 PM

I agree. I had to take a break halfway through and re-read War And Peace just for a breather.
As for why, I had the same question the other night when I was mistakenly watching some 'pimp my ricer' show on speedvision. (I was gluing up some plywood and my hands were too sticky to switch channels or throw anything at the TV)
Anyway, the kid had a hopped-up Chrysler 300 with flat screens all over, a DVD player, 50 disc Alpine changer, a PS2, GPS, 38 Polk speakers, Onstar, four Waring blenders and a silkworm missile launcher just for good measure. $125,000 invested, he said.
Yeah, but it's still a Chrysler.

Regards,

304065 12-15-2006 01:59 PM

No 993 multilink after all that?

skinnerd 12-15-2006 02:02 PM

Jeez.....
He should have written a book.
Probably he would get way more money back on that (a book)....compared with what eBay will likely bring for the car.
I gave up reading 5 minutes in.

Well if it walks like a duck and talks like one, I guess this *REALLY* is a 993 Turbo, expect for the tub, engine, suspension and a few other smallish details :D :D

Really is a nice job, though. Too bad it probably isn't worth much (if any) more than the sum of the parts.

No, no, no. You're just not getting it. It is exactly because it is not a 993 that it is worth more than a 993. Or something like that. Wait I'm not sure about that either.

goat 12-15-2006 02:34 PM

That was quite a write up. I'm tried now.
Agree on Why??
I would cringe on the DMV loops you would have to do if you did buy it , at least in CA.

FinallyGotOne 12-15-2006 02:40 PM

I would definitely pick that thing up! Very nice job. Car looks sharp! Makes me wanna get a 930 now.

imcarthur 12-15-2006 02:46 PM

That's how you sell a car on eBay if you want max dollars from the great unwashed. You OVERSELL. And he did.

Ian

skinnerd 12-15-2006 04:00 PM

hahaha.....Noah, that's great!:D

A930Rocket 12-15-2006 04:19 PM

No reserve either....

If it checks out, someone will get a nice ride.

Monza_dh 12-15-2006 04:24 PM

Interior is impressive. He had me till the trunk and front suspension shots......

the 12-15-2006 04:35 PM

Man, you guys are harsh.

The car looks very well done to me. Is it a real 993 Turbo? Of course not. But is Jack's car a real RSR? No. But they can still be nice cars and fun projects.

Did he spend too much money on it on his project? Umm, yeah. But if that's a crime, most of us would be doing hard time by now.

Could he have bought a real 993 Turbo for the money he spent? Maybe. But if projects have to make financial sense, a lot of us are morons.

Does he suffer from verbosity? Yeah, but I think he is just passionate about his project. Nothing wrong with that.

Gene Wilkes 12-15-2006 04:36 PM

Perfect candidate for a long hood conversion!

The,
I agree. Some of the folks who aren't speaking up are those with larger invoice folders.

Maybe Pelican should create a new forum called "911 Owner Criticism". Every forum contributor must submit pics and invoices for their own car - call it the cost of participation.

wonder if all the 993 parts came off the same 993............

... and he backdated the 993 with the 80 stuff. That would be ..... cool. An 80 "SC" with 993 suspension.

lyon 12-15-2006 11:14 PM

yeah, that is one corny auction.

htron435 12-16-2006 11:42 AM

I have to admit that I did the same thing once. Sometimes the passion for excellence or "need for speed" causes one to take steps that others with more sense might consider irrational.
Before and after shots. Can't tell you what's under the skin though -- it's classified.

To this day, nothing else compares. Ahh, the thrill of competition. The smell of burning oil. The stains of multiple fluids leaking constantly from various seals and gaskets.

Early_S_Man 12-16-2006 11:57 AM

Jay,

Very nice! I get the feeling there was a gold Hurst Performance special project for Car and Driver under all that rattle-can paint and Tempra ... must have missed that issue!

mppickett 12-16-2006 05:52 PM

Jay,

Very nice project. I look forward to your eBay ad :)

shanghai_todd 12-17-2006 12:33 AM

Admit that it is a very clean and great looking car and will probably fool 99.5% of the people out there into believing it is the $70K real deal. As long as it performs and looks the part and women are lining up to ride it I am happy :)

Is my sarcasm meter broken or am I to understand that seeing a 993TT *CLONE* (built on a 930 chassis and missing the TT mechanicals, BTW) makes you want to get a 930???!!!

slakjaw 12-17-2006 04:17 AM

wtfe

I think it is a very, very nice car.

+1

Why dont we all just stop working on our projects buy a bunch of sweater vests change our names to biff and drive 993's

Jbabic 12-17-2006 07:27 AM

I better check my car....it could be an imposter also....

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1166369208.jpg

AvonGil 12-17-2006 07:51 AM

Call me crazy, but I think thats a great idea. Everything great about the 993, body, interior etc. But you still get a lighter weight traditionally suspended 911 that most people seems to prefer over the multi link setup. Great idea, and nice execution.

lateapex911 12-17-2006 08:40 AM

Love it or hate it, I DO give the guy credit. A TON of work...obviously more than he bargained for, and it does appear to be thorough and well done. But he's not pompous to the extreme, like many Porsche car ads on ebay are...such as the recent 8500rpm, 165 MPH 911S, and he DOES tell us whats not good, and where the car fails in comparision to a 993.

Sure it doesn't take a rocket wizard to figure out some of it, but at least he mentioned it.

The car's not for everyone, including me, but there's far worse out there.

Leland Pate 12-17-2006 10:32 AM

Up until I saw the photos of the trunk, I was starting to think it was a 993 and the 1980 part was a typo.

calling911 12-17-2006 10:38 AM

Look close at the front torsion bar mounts.. THEY WERE PATCH REPAIRED.. indicitive of other short cuts.

911pcars 12-17-2006 10:45 AM

All other things being equal, what's more important, multilink rear suspension or 800 lbs. less weight?

Sherwood

the 12-17-2006 11:41 AM

LOL, I just noticed that the guy who started this thread owns a stock engined 1980 911SC designed to look like a later model slope nose TURBO.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Glasgow 911SC 12-17-2006 12:25 PM

tough crowd here. I'd take it.

sand_man 12-17-2006 12:58 PM

I don't think it's a tough crowd at all...most have said that it's a very detailed car and Evilbay ad...and it is. This is being talked about on Rennlist, too, and as I said there, it would have made more sense to just buy a 993. Know when to say say "when"...

Formerly Steve Wilkinson 12-17-2006 01:07 PM

What's the fun in "just buying a 993"? As I said in my book, for the money I spent on my gold-plated SC, I could have bought a brand-new 911. Would have taken me an hour to drive to Nanuet and back, give it an hour at the dealership doing the paperwork...two hours and I'm done. Instead, I had two _years_ of pleasure (and education) getting upside down on a very powerful, fast and fun quarter-century-old car.
