rsr dash covering

hi, i'm thinking of covering my dash in the felt-like material used in the rsr with the rubber edging as opposed to the normal dash pad. has anyone done this? what material works best? how do you plug the various dash holes to support the material? any info and detail photos wil help
thanks,
matt

I believe that this was done on RSRs with perlon.

I believe AppBiz sells the perlon RS Carpet kit. I wonder if they sell a perlon dash cover. I tried to look up AppBiz.com on the internet, but with no success. Maybe the site is down.

It's important to note how the instrument sheetmetal is joined on the arc: it's a spot-welded sharp edge.

if going with just a carpet cover on the sheetmetal, length of 1/4 or 3/8 inch fuel line sliced down the length and glued on is good way to save a few fingers during any kind of crash or OTE.

I am in the process of doing this modification. I took the dash out, but have not completed the job yet. I am looking forward to other Pelicans' input.

I've been looking at a bunch of RSR pics recently. It seems the '73 RSR's had stock dash pads while the 74+ RSR's generally had carpet in place of the stock dash pad.

Is this correct?

mcmaster-carr has a rubber edge trim with a metal crimp type interior that will work for the edge. i think there is some variety for the actual material so i will just find some perlon-like that matched the carpets. any ideas for supporting the fabric over the various holes? i'm thinking of cutting out some card board and using spray adhesive to stick it to the fabric so there arn't to many sags.

Instead of cardboard, how about sheet styrene or thin sheet aluminum or even light steel? All of these materials are easy to find in small pieces at either model shops or well-stocked hardware stores, and they're thin enough that they'll be easy to cut and won't raise a notable edge with a thick carpet-like material over it. If you get metal, and feel up to it, you could even try brazing the pieces to the metal dash, otherwise, some kind of good adhesive should probably work fine.

Wow! How about posting some pics of your factory '73 RSR!

Thanks for confirming the dashboard differences between '73 and '74+ RSR's.

I would like to see pics as well. In an effort to keep this thread on the topic of dash coverings, I suggest starting a separate introduction thread about your car. Afterall, it is tradition around here. I am just concerned that this thread will become a "post your RSR pics" thread, which are already out there.

Bulk Perlon Material

We have factory match perlon custom made 5500 square yards at a time. Its dark charcoal colored and latex backed just like the factory stuff. We are happy to sell it by the running yard or it can be special ordered through our host. I've been trying to get Wayne to stock a roll so he can sell cut lengths (perhaps you guys can give him a nudge). Our part number is BMPERLON it is sold by the running yard the material is 72" wide so each running yard is 2 square yards. The price per running yard is $30

Bringing up an old thread....

Scott - Any more photos of the 934.5 dash or any other info on the car?

Can anyone tell us how the factory covered the holes to stop the Perlon from sagging?

Thin aluminum pieces w pop rivets perhaps?

Len

If you drive your car at night, you will not like this conversion ! Without the shroud of the dashpad, the guages are reflected on the windshield and it is distracting
